Scientific Breakthrough from SA: SMU student files for Pepperboom tree patent to cure respiratory diseases.

Lesiba Lekgoathi, a PhD candidate at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (formerly Medunsa), has successfully filed a provisional patent for a novel compound found in the peperboom tree— a medicinal plant traditionally used in rural communities to treat colds and flu. 🌿

His research led to the discovery of geranylgeranyl acetate, a powerful diterpenoid that inhibits two critical SARS-CoV-2 enzymes: PLpro and Mpro. These enzymes help the virus replicate and suppress the immune system.

By blocking them, the compound prevents the virus from maturing and keeps the immune system active.
