Grigori Perelman is a Russian mathematician who solved the legendary Poincaré Conjecture, one of the hardest problems in mathematics that had confused experts for nearly 100 years.
The problem was considered so important that it became one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, with a $1 million reward for anyone who could solve it.
Between 2002 and 2003, Perelman published a series of papers proving the conjecture using advanced geometric theories built on the work of mathematician Richard Hamilton.
Experts around the world spent years checking his proof before finally confirming that he had solved it correctly.
In 2006, Perelman was awarded the Fields Medal, often called the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics,” but he refused to accept it.
Then in 2010, he also turned down the $1 million Millennium Prize. Instead of becoming famous or wealthy, he chose to live a quiet and private life in Saint Petersburg, Russia, avoiding media attention and public recognition.
