🇬🇭 Ghana Money Market Update: Liquidity Surge Drives Sharp Repricing Across the T-Bill Curve
A week characterised by substantial liquidity injections saw Treasury bill yields decline sharply, as investors rushed to reinvest coupon proceeds from maturing government securities.
Approximately GHS 10.8 billion in cash coupons were paid into the market during the week, triggering strong demand at the Treasury auction. As a result, T-bill rates fell cumulatively by 149bps across the curve, with the most pronounced move occurring on the 364-day bill, which declined by 91bps, from 12.50% to 11.59%.
Investor demand surged, with GHS 14.3 billion in bids submitted, marking the highest tender volume since 2 March 2026. The aggressive participation reflected investors' urgency to redeploy liquidity amid shrinking yield levels and limited primary market supply.
Government ultimately accepted GHS 5.9 billion, marginally above both its GHS 5.4 billion target and GHS 5.4 billion in maturities, while rejecting GHS 8.4 billion worth of bids, the largest volume of rejected bids since 23 February 2026. Investors responded to the excess liquidity environment by lowering the upper end of their bid ranges by 168bps, while the Treasury further reinforced the yield compression by reducing the upper acceptance band by 110bps.
Liquidity management operations remained active, with the Bank of Ghana issuing GHS 23 billion of 14-day OMO bills against GHS 22.23 billion in maturities. The net effect was an absorption of approximately GHS 767 million from the banking system as institutions reinvested portions of their coupon receipts into central bank instruments.
Looking ahead, the market is expected to remain active, particularly in the secondary market, as over GHS 8 billion of unsuccessful auction bids seeks alternative investment opportunities in outstanding government securities. This should continue to support demand and keep downward pressure on yields in the near term.
Next Auction
Target issuance: GHS 5.15 billion
Maturities: GHS 5.10 billion
Our View: The combination of significant system liquidity, high bid-cover dynamics, and sustained rejection rates suggests that investors remain willing to sacrifice yield to secure allocations. Unless liquidity conditions tighten materially, the bias for front-end yields remains downward in the short term.
Ebo Buckman, Deputy Director of Communications for the United Party, has disclosed his long-standing disappointment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing a series of incidents dating back to 2004 when he was contesting for Parliament.
According to him, his resentment deepened after the party refused his request to postpone his vetting following the death of his mother and allegedly delayed the process further, among other experiences he described as troubling.
