Mitch McConnell has held one of the most powerful positions in American government for decades. He has shaped courts, budgets, and the rules of the Senate itself. Yet for more than five weeks he has remained largely unseen by the public after a fall that left him briefly unconscious and then hospitalized with pneumonia.

A single photograph from July 12, a carefully crafted statement, and reports that he is “working by phone” are not the same as proof of life. They are not the same as a living, speaking, accountable senator standing before the people who sent him there.

Power that operates in permanent shadow ceases to be democratic power. It becomes something else… something quieter, more managed, less answerable. The longer Mitch McConnell remains invisible, the more the question stops being medical and starts being constitutional: can a seat in the United States Senate be occupied by a man the public is no longer permitted to see?

Proof of life is not cruelty. It is the bare minimum a free people are entitled to demand of those who claim to represent them.
