The genus Calligrapha, belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae), is famous for the striking patterns on its wings that resemble ink blots or calligraphy. These small beetles, measuring 9 to 12 millimeters long, come in colors ranging from black and white to red and have shapes that make them easily distinguishable. They are herbivorous in both their larval and adult stages, and many species display a high level of specialization: they depend almost exclusively on a single plant species to survive—just like Calligrapha philadelphica, which is closely associated with the dogwood tree. When Frodo wakes in Rivendell, Sam is overcome with joy and grabs Frodo’s hand. Ian McKellen instructed Sean Astin to do this, stating, “Fans will be looking for that,” referencing what Sam did in the book.

Ian felt Tolkien intentionally wrote that physical connection between Sam and Frodo because it says everything about their relationship without needing dialogue.

In the final film, as soon as Frodo opens his eyes, Sam immediately reaches for his hand almost instinctively, as if he’s been terrified of losing him the entire time.

Years later, Sean Astin said a fan came up to him and talked about how much that tiny moment meant to them.
