@BugoTheCat @gerardsans I have no idea why anyone would feel the need to rewrite the TypeScript compiler again. I've just observed that AI-fueled rewrites of popular open-source projects have become a popular activity in the last year, and guests that possibly the trend will extend.

They don't *need* a lot of water. They can be built to use very little water. But many of them use water evaporation for cooling. This trades off usage of water that gets evaporated away, but saves power. The trade-off makes sense in areas where there is plenty of water, and is foolish where water is scarce and expensive.

@cmsinvests No, but I am curious, is that the price of this car? I thought desirable Ferraris were going up rapidly in price, and this one might already be considerably higher.

Every good dishwasher feature becomes illegal over time. The latest victim is the button you could push to give it an extra rinse, which was an extremely smart thing to do to avoid detergent residue (quite unhealthy for humans) on your dishes. At my old house, I used municipal water to irrigate a large lawn. At my new house with a new dishwaster, I can't spend an extra gallon rinsing my dishes. But somebody somewhere got to say they increased the water efficiency requirement by x%, so I guess they're happy.

@RobertMSterling I refuse to participate in the epidemic of fraud because, quite simply, it is wrong. But it is frustrating to see how common it is, and even more frustrating that our government tolerates it.

The line probably isn't sharp, but maybe you're talking about the difference between being in the reviewer business versus being in the influencer business.

(On the other hand, Out of Spec apparently has a free long term loaner and their tests are typically much more thoughtful in terms of what and how to test vs many more formal review operations. For example, Out of Spec takes on the expense of having a mobile charger on hand to tow in by truck as needed, while some other reviewers "test" EV range but don't drive them until they run out of charge because it would be inconvenient to run out of charge.)

I've occasionally overheard conversations where someone is trying to determine the extent to which they will respect someone else based on not just veteran status or which branch, but rather assessing the danger during their specific service history.

Obviously a critical concern. But you can probably pick up a pretty safe car 10 years old for much, much less than buying or leasing a brand new one. Somebody else on the thread pointed out a Volvo as an example of that. Obviously, if your resources are unlimited, buy the very newest, very safest vehicle available as every teen's first car. In a world of limited resources, buy a car that is pretty high up the safety rankings and not terribly old.

But I also see a gas-powered fun weekend car in my future.

@JTedestal @nikkharris If Tesla gets this working, which seems likely at this point, production capacity might well exceed the rate at which consumers adopt the technology. If the result is price competition, that could leave a real struggle for any other maker to operate in the US profitably.

@Mattlinn01 I think there are high-end Mercedes models that do exactly that, motors that can move manual vent angle controls. But this is an especially expensive design, and such things, prone to break in even more expensive ways, so I don't expect it will spread to midrange cars.

I've noticed there's a lot of personal idiosyncrasy around vent angles. Some people set them once when buying a car to get sort of a "glancing blow" and leave it there. Others have stark preference swings, where at one moment the air must blow directly on the face and the next moment it must not blow where it can be felt at all.

@RivianTrackr 20 minutes that could have been concisely explained in 2 minutes is the nature of the media (long form video, YouTube). Complaining about that is silly. There are other venues, like this one, suitable for short dense communication.
