Every Believer Has the Holy Spirit. Speaking in Tongues Is a Manifestation, Not His Arrival

One of the greatest misconceptions in many Christian circles is the idea that a believer receives the Holy Spirit at salvation but only receives the "real" Holy Spirit later at what is called the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The New Testament paints a different picture.

The moment you believed, you were born again by the Spirit (John 3:5–6).

The moment you believed, you were indwelt by the Spirit (Romans 8:9).

The moment you believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13–14).

There is no Christian without the Holy Spirit. If the Spirit is absent, salvation is absent.

So what, then, do many people call the "baptism of the Holy Spirit" after salvation?

I believe it is not the first reception of the Holy Spirit but the first manifestation of the Holy Spirit already dwelling within the believer.

Speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing, words of knowledge, boldness in witness, and the operation of spiritual gifts are manifestations of the indwelling Spirit not proof that He just arrived.

This also explains why believers have different experiences.

Some begin speaking in tongues the very day they believe.

Others take weeks.

Some take years.

Some have never been taught that the gifts are available today.

Others were taught to fear them.

Some grew up in churches where no room was given for the gifts to be exercised.

Others were discipled in environments that encouraged believers to step out in faith.

The difference is often not the presence of the Holy Spirit but the believer's understanding, discipleship, faith, and willingness to yield.

Notice that Paul never questioned whether the Corinthians had the Holy Spirit. Instead, he taught them how to use the gifts properly (1 Corinthians 12–14). The issue was not receiving the Spirit but growing in the manifestation of the Spirit.

Just as every believer has muscles but not every believer has the same strength, every believer has the Holy Spirit, but believers mature differently in yielding to His workings.

Let's stop making Christians doubt whether they have the Holy Spirit because they do not yet speak in tongues.

Instead, let us teach them who they are in Christ, what they have already received, and how to grow in walking in the Spirit.

The Christian life is not about waiting for the Holy Spirit to come.

It is about learning to yield to the Holy Spirit who already lives within you.

This life is funny. It is good to put privilege into context.

Some of you have never entered Danfo before because your parents' driver drive you around, while others have to jump buses with their parents and even lap their younger one so the fare would suffice.

Some of you don't know what it means for school fees to not be paid. You just find yourself going to school whenever school resumes and then vacation to London in summer. Others have to be embarrassed in the presence of their friends and watch their parents continually beg the principal for grace time.

Se of you know where your future is headed even in SS1. Your parents have told you that you're going to Covenant for your first degree, after which you get a Masters at the London School of Economics. Others have to first focus on the cheapest school and catchment area to increase their chances of admission and actually staying in school.

Some of you get up to N300k monthly as allowance while other get N20k and "remember the child of whom you are, remember the home you come from."

Some of you can afford to fail. There is financial might to back you up. If you fail, you try again. You can even try something else, and it would be funded. Others cannot afford to fail. They need to succeed at all cost to break the cycle of poverty. They also have siblings looking up to them because investment in you means taking over your parents' responsibility to help with your siblings' welfare.
