The complete disbelief that so many of us have with the media coddling of Thomas Frank is largely down to the fact that his predecessor was mocked and laughed at only a year ago for being in a similar position - even though he had trophies and a 5th placed finish behind him. There is no explanation for the insane amount of grace he’s being given for seemingly no reason at all.
This would be a war crime even if there were an actual war and these people were actual combatants, which there isn't and they weren't.
