The fact that the US is hiding its real casualty numbers is proof enough that the people who command this effort have bad conscience, and know they are fighting an illicit, unpopular, immoral war.

If they believes they fighting a just war, they would not hide those numbers: they would take pride in them, and use them to demonstrate the kind of sacrifice American soldiers and the American public were making.

They did not hide their casualty numbers in the world wars, or even in Vietnam and Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan: they shared them because they believed, delusional as they were, that they were fighting for good.

Grim’s argument still gives Democratic leadership too much credit.

Scalia dies in 2016. Garland gets slow-walked into a blockade while Democrats spend months talking norms and constitutional etiquette. Then RBG dies in 2020 and Republicans jam ACB through almost immediately.

But I don’t think Democratic leadership was simply naive. The pattern around Bernie makes that harder to believe.

2016 DNC emails leak. Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigns. Donna Brazile later admits the Clinton campaign had major control over DNC operations before the primary ended. Bernie getting undercut wasn’t exactly subtle.

Then 2020:
Buttigieg and Klobuchar suddenly consolidate behind Biden before Super Tuesday after reported Obama intervention. Sanders wins Nevada and the entire institutional center of the party snaps into alignment almost overnight. Bernie gets undercut again.
That’s why the “Democrats just failed to fight hard enough” explanation feels incomplete.

Leadership often looked far more comfortable managing populist energy than unleashing it. Fundraise as resistance. Govern as caretakers. Preserve the machinery first.
