UPDATE. @NWSMelbourne says Nicole is now a Cat 1 Hurricane. Large rain shield ahead of system where officials believe greatest and most damaging winds are. Impacts ramping up with observed wind speeds at 35 MPH and heavier gusts up to 50 MPH along coast and east of US 1.
โช Impacts are beginning! A dangerous marine, coastal flood, and major beach erosion event is already occurring, with large breaking waves and strong winds buffeting the coast. Nicole will bring added concerns of damaging winds and gusts and excessive rain tonight.
Tropical Storm Nicole is nearing hurricane force as it approaches the northwest Bahamas, and is currently forecast to make landfall along the lower Treasure Coast (within Martin and/or Saint Lucie Counties) late this evening at or near Category 1 hurricane strength.
