Dinner tonight was a combined effort from hubby & I. Chicken schnitz, mashed carrots & swede, broc. All smothered in gravy. So yummy 😋🥳
Have a relaxing evening everyone 🥰
Al Pacino nearly threw away the role of a lifetime, and the person he had to fight was himself.
Paramount never wanted him for Michael Corleone. They wanted Redford, Nicholson, Beatty, O'Neal. Anybody tall, anybody famous. Coppola wanted the short unknown from the theater and had to go to war with his own studio to get him.
And while Coppola was fighting that war, Pacino was barely showing up for it.
He blew his first screen test with a hangover. He went through three more rounds of auditions so tense he started dodging Coppola's phone calls. At one point he told the director to stop fighting so hard for him. As John Lahr reported it in The New Yorker, Pacino's line to Coppola was basically: it's okay, we'll work together another time, there are other things to do.
The director was risking his career on this actor. The actor was trying to let him off the hook.
Even after he got the part, it almost fell apart. The first week of footage was so flat that Pacino watched it and thought the same thing the studio did. This is the worst film ever made. Coppola sat him down, showed him the dailies, and talked him back into his own performance.
The restaurant scene, Michael shooting Sollozzo and McCluskey, was moved up the schedule so Pacino could prove he belonged. It's the scene where Michael stops being the good son. It's also the scene that saved Pacino's job.
