For the past four years, Poland has remained silent.

It stayed silent when, in the fervor of “decommunization,” streets named after Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych began appearing in places where people remember the OUN and UPA not as freedom fighters, but as killers of Communist youth activists and Red Army soldiers.

Poland stayed silent when military unit bearing the name Nachtigall - Nazi collaborationist unit - appeared within Ukraine’s armed forces.

It stayed silent when Azov-linked brigades increasingly presented themselves as heirs to the OUN and UPA, established the Konovalets School, and began commemorating the anniversary of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division instead of Victory Day over Nazism.

It stayed silent when the Azov movement promoted maps of a “Greater Ukraine” that included territories belonging to Poland.

But every year that Poland remains silent, this monster of ethnic nationalism grows stronger, more aggressive, and more demanding.

The cycle of silence must be broken — not only to defend Poland’s national interests, but to save Ukraine from itself.

Because the Ukraine that is emerging today is increasingly consumed by a chauvinistic, militarized form of ethnic nationalism. It is an ideology that devours the country from within while simultaneously becoming a source of anxiety for its neighbors.

Ignoring this trend will not make it disappear. Silence has not moderated it. Silence has enabled it.

And unless that silence ends, the consequences will not stop at Ukraine’s borders.

Remembering the victims begins with naming the perpetrators!

Today, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory @Uinp_gov_ua published a statement on its website regarding the commencement of search work in Huta Pieniacka. The announcement states, among other things:

"On February 28, 1944, Huta Pieniacka became the victim of an armed attack. According to archival sources, the attack on the village was carried out by a unit of the German police. A significant portion of Huta Pieniacka's inhabitants died tragically, and the village itself was burned down."

This description places responsibility for the crime on an unspecified "German police unit," while omitting the findings of historians and prosecutors who indicate that the pacification was carried out primarily by the 4th Galician Volunteer SS Police Regiment, associated with the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (Galizien) and composed of Ukrainian volunteers.

Secondly, the statement does not mention the involvement of units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and local Ukrainian nationalist paramilitary groups, which, according to witness testimonies, participated in surrounding the village, identifying residents, and carrying out the massacre.

The content of the statement reflects the narrative promoted by some Ukrainian historians who deny Ukrainian participation in the Huta Pieniacka massacre. They base their arguments, among other things, on claims made by Yevhen Pobihushchyi, an officer of both the SS and the UPA.

Furthermore, the phrase that "a significant portion of the inhabitants died tragically" constitutes an unjustified softening of the description of events. Huta Pieniacka was not the site of some vaguely defined wartime tragedy, but rather of a mass murder of civilians. The residents were murdered in a planned and brutal manner. Some died in flames inside farm buildings or homes. The victims were primarily Polish civilians women, children, and the elderly.

The number of murdered victims is estimated at between 850 and 1,100 people. The exact number will be determined after search and exhumation work has been completed.

So far, the identities of 634 victims have been established.

Maksym Zhorin, a deputy commander of the Azov-rooted Third Assault Brigade calls on 🇵🇱 to stop their "hysteria" over UPA and abandon their "pseudo-historical theories."

"While the Polish side is busy staging hysteria over the commemoration of the UPA in Ukraine, their country is simultaneously seeing a growing influx of migrants from Asia and Latin America.

Guided by their pseudo-historical theories, Polish authorities are creating conditions that encourage Ukrainians to leave. They are being replaced by migrants who, in the long run, may displace Poles themselves — just as has already happened in France, Britain, Germany, and elsewhere.

It would be far healthier to build a shared European future based on mutual respect for the heroes of other nations, rather than obsessing over historical grievances and complexes. Otherwise, in the pursuit of "history," one may eventually reach a point where there is no one left to teach it to future generations".
