🇩🇪 Germany's Chancellor Merz is going after the country's sky-high sick-leave numbers, and plenty of businesses have wanted this for a while.

No more calling in sick by phone. Under the change, workers will need a doctor's note from the very first day out.

"We know this is a tough decision. But we can no longer afford this competitive disadvantage caused by prolonged absences from work."

Germany has some of the highest reported sick-leave rates in Europe, and the pitch is that a day-one certificate closes the door on the ones phoning it in.
