The Wawel-Dragon belongs to Polish folklore. Legend has it that the beast lived near Krakau and many maiden had been sacrificed to appease him. One day however, a shoemaker boy, Dratewka, hoodwinked the dragon and won Wanda's hand (King Krak's daughter).

I hope you are not easily grossed-out: witness the Scorpion-Man. He's a creature of Mespotamian origin and is most famously depicted in the Enûma Eliš. If you want to know more about him you have to research yourself for I am too scared.

Due to its form, scientists named a part of the brain "hippocampus", which is also the scientific name for the lovely seahorse. But long before that, the ancients imagined literal sea-horses being put in front of the cart of some sea deities. Those were also named hippocampi.

@GenXYL Some might say all mythological creatures are made up, others believe in them of course :) Well, we haven’t seen a Wolpertinger yet. Maybe we aren’t beautiful enough though.

Bavarian culture doesn't merely offer beer and dirndl to sweeten your day, but also the mythological #Wolpertinger. It is a chimera-like beast with features of rabbit, duck, deer and squirrel. According to legend only young, beautiful maidens can see them.

The #Firebird makes its appearance in many #Slavic #Folktales. Its feather is the object of desire and goal of the #hero's quest, who ventures to capture it. Although similar in design, the #Phoenix's tie to immortality makes it a completely different creature.

The Erchitu is another strange, shape-shifting creature and belongs to Roman folklore. Its a man transformed into an ox-like being as punishment for some evil deed. Two demons keep two candles on his horns lit; he could be saved if they were to be extinguished.

In the spirit of the approaching easter bunny: Are you aware that Pliny the Eldar mentions the existence of a grotesque tribe called "Panotioi" (Greek: all-eared people). They presumably live in the freezing north, use their earlobes as clothing and cushion. Jealous? I know I am.
