the funny thing to me is that people call argentineans racist because our national team doesn't have black players, as if a team photo were a moral audit. the funniest thing is that we had black captains in our national team when many of the countries that are criticizing us enslaved black people or segregated them.

we took in millions of poor christian immigrants from italy, spain, france, and germany, people who arrived with nothing and clawed their way into something. we took in jewish families fleeing pogroms, hunger, and war in ukraine, poland, and russia, people who were being murdered for their identity elsewhere and found a place here to keep it. we had muslim immigration from syria and lebanon, and we elected a president descended from it. argentina had a small afro argentine population that was gradually absorbed into that enormous wave over generations. the demographics are the sediment of a century of desperate people betting their lives on a place at the end of the world.

we didn't run overseas colonies. we didn't build our wealth on plantation slavery the way other countries in the region did. and to this day you can arrive, live here two years, and become a citizen. that is not the profile of a country built on keeping people out. it's close to the opposite.

what actually bothers me is the assumption buried inside the accusation: that history has one correct destination, and every nation is supposed to arrive at the same demographic mix, the same multicultural template, or else it stands accused. it's a demand for uniformity. the world's cultures are interesting precisely because they aren't interchangeable. a country is a particular answer to the question of how people should live together, worked out over generations, and flattening every answer into the same one doesn't expand human variety, it deletes it.

argentina is diverse. it just happens to be a country with deep christian and jewish european roots, and that history is worth carrying forward rather than apologizing for. a place with no memory of what it is has nothing to offer the people who come to it.

protecting the identity of a country and welcoming immigrants aren't opposites. they depend on each other. immigration works when there's actually a culture strong enough to join, something with enough gravity that arriving means becoming part of something rather than dissolving into nothing. collapsing "protect your identity" and "racism" into the same word is lazy, and it quietly insults every immigrant who came here precisely because argentina was a real place with a real character, not a blank space.

so yes, i'm pro immigration. i want people to come. but i want them to come the way generations before them did, to work, to respect our laws and our culture, and to actually become argentine, not to be told that the country owes them a version of itself that no longer resembles the thing they crossed an ocean to reach. that was the deal that built this place. it asked something of people, and it gave them something real in return.

by calling us racist and trying to force us to become something we're not, you're the one doing the imposing. you say you're against one culture dominating others, but demanding that every country reshape itself into the same multicultural template is exactly that. it's one model, your model, applied to everyone. you're not opposing cultural domination, you're practicing it, and the worst kind: a domination that calls itself justice while knowing nothing about the history of the people it's rearranging, just so you can feel better about yourself.
