The LGBTIQ+ Human Rights Sports Coalition consists of sixteen international groups.

In 2020 we developed a series of asks of FIFA and #Qatar authorities and began to lobby for action on the rights of LGBTIQ+ people around the 2022 Men’s World Cup.

.@AdamCrafton_ made this point in the Coalition webinar yesterday - reassurances given by the Qataris in private mean very little.

If they can backtrack on a non- human rights issue such as beer, then what trust can there be of LGBTIQ+ rights surviving.

This is also why it was so dangerous of national associations to be speaking for Qatar in saying what would and would not be safe for LGBTQ fans. Because the goalposts move and the country itself does not offer on-record clarity.

So there we go; the beer’s gone, on a whim of the Qatari state. Let’s just hope they don’t simply change the mind about backroom assurances given to LGBTQ people at some point in the next month.
