Getting rid of Traffic in The Metropolis?

The only positive to this move is pulling Officer numbers back to Response Teams.

But we’re looking at a short term fix for no long term gain.

Traffic is a specialist role. A huge percentage of Traffic Officers hold a number of highly useful skills. They tend to be Advanced Car and Motor Cycle (Solo) trained and very importantly, fast road trained. A smaller percentage are TPAC trained (Tactical Pursuit and Containment) which whilst looked at with amazement by the rest of the world; who will ram anyone who fails to stop off the road, is the safest way to end a pursuit and prevent endless referrals to the IOPC.

Is this a case of fudging the numbers?

Yes on paper these Officers coming back to Response will increase numbers on paper, but what hasn’t been reckoned with is the abstractions it will create, leaving the numbers on team pretty much where they are now.

Solos are required almost every day for protests, road closures, escort duties, they keep London moving. So much so, the Met has to request constant mutual aid of Solos to help with all of the duties they’re required on.

Only Fast Road Trained Officers can deal with issues on A Roads and Motorways. For good reason. Already this year a Police Officer was killed responding to an emergency on a Fast Road. Those calls come all day everyday and have to be deployed to, in most cases immediately, hence most Traffic Officers are Advanced drivers.

Something that truly hasn’t been thought about at all, is how much our road network is used by organised crime. Proactive Traffic Policing is invaluable for taking drugs and weapons off the roads everyday, which links in nicely with TPAC capability.

TPAC capability is essential for ending pursuits safely. As you can imagine, criminals carrying weapons and drugs rarely want to stop. TPAC only works with multiple TPAC cars available at the same time, so if they’re tied up at another call or on a guard or a crime scene, it isn’t going to work and serious offenders are likely to escape.

Finally, moving Collision Investigation and Forensic Collision Investigation units into borough CID is going to cause a whole world of unnecessary stress and strain that truly no one needs, their remit is complex and oh so very necessary.

I see very little value in getting rid of Traffic.

What would be better and help Response Policing, would be a very simple agreement, that if a Traffic Unit comes across an outstanding incident which does happen, their default isn’t to ask for Response to relieve them immediately. That they deal with it in the first instance, unless they truly are required to leave urgently and that decision is made by the Section Sergeant on Borough who manages deployments, managing the risk and getting back to what they should be doing.

On our VRI (video recorded interview) week we use actors for the assessments - one of actors who I’d never met said ‘you guys get so much bad press and until now I didn’t see this side, thank you’ - I said yep there are some truly amazing humans in this job 💙”

Absolutely, they do an amazing job and there’s no where near enough of them!

You might remember earlier this year a @DC_Police Officer was nearly thrown off a balcony whilst dealing with a violent suspect.

The suspect had also smashed a bottle over PC Alice Beer’s head, but still she fought back and managed to keep hold of the suspect until colleagues arrived.

PC Beer suffered serious injuries, but never wavered from her duty to protect the public.

The suspect, Guy Pottle was sentenced to 10.5 years in prison for his attack on PC Beer, and I’m pleased to say she’s back on duty with her team.

A true privilege to build PC Beer in #Lego and highlight her bravery. 🫡

GTA 6 LEAKS : It’s actually insane to realize that this specific location seen in the Rockstar Games website video was already present in the 2022 leaks. 😮❤️

Looking at these side-by-side screenshots, it’s wild to think that some people have likely known about the entire game for years in total secrecy. The level of detail is just incredible.

But it’s not the only time the public have helped out…👀

Over a decade ago, I was stood on a static point, deterring crime (allegedly). One of the few reasons we could leave the point, was for an emergency call. Towards the end of my shift, an immediate response (I Grade) call came through to a fire around the corner from my point.

I put up for it immediately and jogged round the corner. As I arrived, there was no smoke, no fire and a bemused security guard. As I was about to ask Met Control (it was borough codes back then for the long in tooth) for an updated location, they gave me one. It was a few miles away. I had a talk through with the Section Sergeant, telling him I was no where near and wouldn’t make it, but he replied there was no one else and to get there as quickly as possible.

I jogged on and made my way to the nearest junction to turn on to the main road and as I did, stopped traffic to cross over. I heard someone shouting at me from one of the cars, and ignored it, being shouted at as a Copper is nothing new. But the word I heard that made me look back was “Help!” I turned to look and it was a black cab driver, shouting “Can I Help?” I ran over told him I was trying to get to a fire and he said “Jump in!” So I did.

Off we went, and a few minutes later, a bemused fire fighter stared at me as I got out of the cab, thanked the driver who shouted “Don’t worry I’ll bill Scotland Yard” and drove off.

Thankfully the fire was well under control, and I could hold the crime scene until CID were made aware.

When the scene closed down and I got back to The Nick, my Skipper asked how my day had been? Expecting to be told it had been boring and pointless stood in one spot, his face lit up and said “that Cabby will be living off that for years.”

I hope so. 🫡
