Twelve years ago today, Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, was shot and killed by a police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. After Wilson killed Michael, his body remained in the middle of Canfield Drive for four hours. What a painful image that was seared into our consciences and deepened the grief, outrage, and questions surrounding his death.

Today, we remember Michael Brown. We remember his family, whose grief did not end after the headlines faded. We remember the Ferguson community and all those who have carried the weight of loss while continuing to pursue justice.

Remembering is not about reliving the past for its own sake. It is about refusing to become indifferent to the taking of human life or desensitized to the conditions that continue to produce injustice. A federal judge told the VA to restore a union contract covering 320,000+ employees.

The VA tried to terminate it again.

The judge called that a “blatant violation” of her injunction.

Then the VA tried again.

Friday, she blocked the latest attempt, finding it “in direct contravention” of her order.

At some point, this stops being a story about unions.

It becomes a story about whether court orders are instructions or suggestions.
