The Power of Asymmetry: Why One Good Stock Can Change Everything.
Yesterday, we talked about one of the mistakes people make in the market. Today, we will talk about a strategy that a lot of people miss.
Jekin Gbedebe 😉
If you’re new to the stock market, fear will humble you quickly.
“What if I lose money?”
“What if the company crashes?”
I won't lie they are valid fears. But they make you miss the biggest advantage you have as an investor:
Asymmetry.
Asymmetry simply means:
Your potential gain is much bigger than your potential loss.
When you buy a stock, two things are true:
A) Your downside is capped.
Worst case? It goes to zero.
You lose what you invested, nothing more. Your #100k investment can't go less than #0
B) Your upside is open-ended.
There’s no ceiling.
That ₦100k stock can become:
₦300k… ₦500k… ₦1M+ over time.
That’s the game.
Limited pain. Unlimited upside.
If you’ve been in this market, you’ve seen it:
Presco Plc → from “expensive” at #800 to unstoppable compounding at #2000
Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc a quiet wealth creator for patient holders
Dangote Cement Plc → long-term holders smiling through cycles
These are not “quick flips.”
Go and read history of when some of these stocks are worth as low as #50 infact i heard someone say on @TNIPodcaster that he got into presco at #7.💀💀 (That’s the story for another day.)
These are stocks that reward patience disproportionately.
Meanwhile… The Other Side Exists
For every winner, there are:
Stocks that go nowhere (Dunlop)
Stocks that decline slowly (Oando)
Stocks that disappoint completely (Skye banks, Bank PHB)
And that’s normal.
The mistake is expecting all your picks to be winners.
You Don’t Need to Be Perfect to win this game!
Let’s say you invest ₦100k each in 5 stocks:
One flops → ₦0
One struggles → ₦50k
One stays flat → ₦100k
One performs → ₦200k
One explodes (your Presco-type pick) → ₦1M
Total invested: ₦500k
Portfolio value: ₦1.35M
You were wrong on most picks…But one winner changed everything. This Is How Real Investors Win
Not by:
Chasing hype stocks, jumping in and out daily, trying to be right every time
But by positioning for big winners… and giving them time to work.
3 Lessons Every NGX Beginner Should Understand
1. Small losses are tuition (@MudiTheInvestor called them "mugu fees". Don't feel bad for paying them it's part of the game😂😉)
That -20% hurts, yes.
But one strong compounder can erase multiple mistakes.
2. Patience pays more than activity: Many NGX winners looked “boring” early.
People sold too soon…
then watched from the sidelines as the real move happened.
3. You won’t know the winner upfront: Nobody knew the full potential early.
That’s why you don’t go all-in on one idea. You spread your bets intelligently (Diversification)
But Guy, Relax…
Not every loss is “asymmetry at work.”
Sometimes:
You chased momentum and FOMO
You entered late.
You ignored valuation.
Then when it drops…
You suddenly become a “long-term investor.”
Be honest with yourself.
Always remember,
You don’t need to catch every move.
You don’t need 20 perfect stocks.
You just need:
A few strong NGX winners, the discipline to hold them, and the maturity to accept small losses
Because in this market:
One Presco-type winner can do more for your portfolio than 10 average trades.
Clarity first. Profit later.
Good morning, and happy investing.
Follow for simple breakdowns and investment alpha.

@wealthcoachomi I like seeing people redeploy their dividends, but I fear they may place themselves in overbought stocks where a decline wipes away their dividends.
Some strong stocks like the one I mentioned may be perfect for redeployment at a discount, but people will chase All Time Highs.
@jideflash Why are they selling just because the company didn't pay dividends? And the companybexplained why... If they company is doing badly or they are other reasons they selling, fine! But on the dividends alone, that's emotion in display.
