International development. Gender equality, sexual & reproductive health, education. @UKHouseofLords Previously Minister at DFID & FCDO. Chair @PlanUK

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Thanks @APPGGlobalSRHR for summarising contributions to my debate on international development outcomes for women and girls in @UKHouseofLords yesterday👇

[APPG on Global SRHR @APPGGlobalSRHR]

In yesterday’s House of Lords debate on international development outcomes for women and girls, several of our APPG members made powerful and evidence‑based contributions on the urgent need to protect SRHR, maternal health and support for women and girls in fragile settings. 🧵

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Delighted to have captained the @UKHouseofLords cross-party ladies team to our first ever victory against @HouseofCommons

All in aid of @macmillancancer and the fantastic work they do helping more people with cancer to get the best care possible

#teamworkmakesthedreamwork

[Lord Speaker @LordSpeaker]

🏆🥇Many congratulations to @UKHouseofLords women's team in the annual charity Parliamentary tug-of-war with MPs. A great display of teamwork, determination and good spirits on both sides, in aid of @macmillancancer #champions #winners 1/2

Cutting foreign aid to fund defence will compromise national security, some of Britain’s most senior former military chiefs have warned in @thetimes👇

Funding defence by cutting overseas aid is a false economy.

[Coalition for Global Prosperity @BritainLeads]

⚡ Important read in today's @thetimes

Major General (Retd) James Cowan CBE DSO, a member of our Advisory Council, is among 51 senior military leaders calling on the Prime Minister to reconsider the £6 billion cut to overseas development funding.

Their position is clear: "Britain's security does not begin at our border. It begins much earlier: where instability can be reduced, conflict prevented, and threats contained before they reach us." 🌐

Bottom trawling in our Marine Protected Areas threatens the sustainability and prosperity of our fisheries and coastal communities.

Yesterday in @UKHouseofLords I asked the Government when they would act 👇

@OceanaUK @WildlifeTrusts

[All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Environment @EnvironmentAPPG]

Bottom trawling causes irreversible damage to our oceans 🌊
@liz_sugg highlights how heavy nets used by large fishing corporations devastate marine life and threaten coastal livelihoods 🐟
Banning this gear in 41 more MPAs would be a major step forward

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Women’s health hubs put women at the centre of care.

Joined-up services mean faster support, shorter waiting lists, fewer barriers, and better health outcomes - across every stage of life.

I asked the government what they are doing to ensure all women can access them 👇

[RoyalCollegeObsGyn @RCObsGyn]

This week, we were pleased to work with @liz_sugg to ask the Government about their commitment to Women’s Health Hubs in the renewed Women’s Health Strategy. Read the RCOG’s priorities for the strategy: https://t.co/vONQ08wHE3

Such sudden and tragic news. Helen was an incredible champion for victims of crime, and contributed to the House of Lords in so many ways.
She achieved a huge amount & was always so kind and generous - in their loss her family can be proud of such a legacy.
Rest in Peace Helen x

[David Cameron @David_Cameron]

Desperately sad to hear that Helen Newlove has died. Helen was so wonderful, warm, brave and plain speaking. She suffered the tragedy of watching her beloved husband, Garry, being murdered by thugs - and then turned that experience into a second life of service. Service to her community, to the country and to Parliament - but, most of all, service to victims of crime to make sure they got a proper hearing and a better deal.

It was a privilege to meet her and an honour to help her into a position where she could dedicate herself to the service of others.

My thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Helen’s husband, Paul, and her daughters, Zoe, Danielle and Amy. Helen leaves a legacy that they - and we all - can be proud of.

On this #dayofthegirl I’m thinking of the 12 million girls forced into marriage every year and the 129 million girls that still remain out of school. A fairer world for girls is a fairer world for us all. @PlanUK

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

On International Day of the Girl, as @PlanUK says: progress that generations have fought so hard for is under threat, and we cannot allow girls’ futures to be pushed backwards.

[Plan International UK @PlanUK]

Gender equality in the UK and around the world is stalling and in some cases, reversing.

Who will stand with girls to protect their hard-fought rights? Because with some amazing celebrities, we're backing girls. 💙

Great to see such a significant contribution from @gatesfoundation to @GlobalFund’s lifesaving work on HIV, TB and malaria 👏

[Malaria No More UK @malarianomoreuk]

The @GatesFoundation’s inspiring $912m pledge to the @GlobalFund is a huge boost in the fight against HIV, TB & malaria. An institution that has saved 70m+ lives. Fully funding it means protecting lives, livelihoods and economies. #ZeroMalaria #StopAtNothing

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

As @PlanUK says: “Finally publishing this guidance would send an important message that the government recognises and cares about the toll of harassment on the wellbeing and safety of women and girls. Until this happens, women and girls across the UK are being failed.”

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Almost 1.5 million women are thought to have been accosted since the Protection from Sex-based Harassment in Public Act passed in September 2023

The guidance for police & prosecutors on how to enforce it has not yet been issued - this needs to happen asap https://t.co/WO8urRPzkF

And @petercardwell’s book tells the story of political animals from Tudor times to the latest usurper. My heart will always be with @Number10cat but I’ll enjoy the other stories too - buy it here - https://t.co/BrsEoPwcI2

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

It’s been quite something to attend two book launches in two days written by my very clever friends Amy Gray and @petercardwell

Well done to both of them for putting pen to paper and getting published, a truly brilliant achievement that I am in awe of 👏

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Amy Gray’s book Red Duchess tells the story of Kitty Atholl, a pioneering British female politician who was full of contradictions - a trailblazer who refused to play by the rules.

I’m looking forward to learning more about her. You can buy it here - https://t.co/zW6COQcBLI

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Great to see the appointment of @dienekeita as the new @UNFPA Executive Director 👏

Diene is a brilliant champion for sexual and reproductive health and rights, just what we need in these challenging times

[UNFPA @UNFPA]

We are excited to announce that @DieneKeita of #Guinea was appointed today by the @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres as Executive Director of @UNFPA.

We look forward to supporting the new @UNFPAChief towards advancing the #GlobalGoals and ensuring rights and choices for all.

These practices are another reason that we need a legal definition of honour based abuse, so these crimes can be recorded and investigated accurately, so we can support survivors, and so authorities get a true picture of the scale of the problem 2/2

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

Virginity testing and hymenoplasty were made illegal in 2022.

In @UKHouseofLords I asked the Government what steps they were taking to encourage reporting and build stronger evidence 1/2

[Baroness Sugg @liz_sugg]

@Atayeshe @UNFPA @UN Thank you Natalia for all your incredible work for women and girls, it has been a pleasure to cross paths with you over the years.

I hope you are rightly proud of a job well done and wish you all the best for the future 👏
