So many wonderful tributes to Sir Alex Younger and rightly so. I will always be grateful for his advice, encouragement and cheerfulness. I served on the National Security Council with him and he was a huge support to me at DFID and MOD. He gave time to @BritainLeads to help future decision takers learn about the world around them. Proud and honoured to have known him.
As the US steps back from global development, the question for Britain is simple: do we lead, or do we follow?
Gates Foundation CEO @MSuzman argues that progress won't stop - but only if others step up.
Britain should be one of them๐ฌ๐ง

As Ebola spreads and the WHO declares an international public health emergency, it is right that the Prime Minister reaffirms the Government's commitment to overseas aid.
Strengthening health systems. Detecting outbreaks early. Preventing crises from becoming catastrophes.
UK aid is an integral part of our national security.
๐ฅEbola is spreading in the DRC. Aid budgets are being cut. These two things are not unrelated.
Our Advisory Council member Sir @StephenROBrien - former UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator - said it plainly this week on @thetimes : cutting development funding leaves less to build on when crisis hits. It's a false economy.
๐ฏ @laurakyrkesmith on why the Global Partnerships Conference shouldn't be sidelined:
"A foreign policy agenda that drives both security and hope could be exactly what is needed. Not a side show but the main event."

โก Important read in today's @thetimes
Major General (Retd) James Cowan CBE DSO, a member of our Advisory Council, is among 51 senior military leaders calling on the Prime Minister to reconsider the ยฃ6 billion cut to overseas development funding.
Their position is clear: "Britain's security does not begin at our border. It begins much earlier: where instability can be reduced, conflict prevented, and threats contained before they reach us." ๐

Happy to be in Zagreb ๐ญ๐ท with @idualliance alongside leaders, legislators, and policymakers from more than 65 member parties.
At todayโs panel on ๐ช๐บ-๐บ๐ธ transatlantic relations, we discussed the state of play of our partnership, grounded in a shared history and democratic values.
As the EU we continue to defend and uphold the rules-based international system while also strengthening our capacity to act and protect our interests.
It was a pleasure to speak at @BritainLeads event this week discussing the future of UK-US relations.
We covered defence, security, trade and a range of other issues. Thanks to @mollyblackall@RyanHensonUK, David Reed MP and Sarah Elliott for a very interesting discussion.
๐ฌ๐ง๐บ๐ธ Across the panel, a clear theme emerged: the UK-US relationship is changing and operating in a more volatile strategic environment.
The relationship is at a critical juncture, and our speakers highlighted the need for the UK to adapt its assumptions about how the alliance functions.
๐ Thank you to all our brilliant speakers and attendees.
๐ฌ๐ง๐บ๐ธ Against the backdrop of the King's State Visit to the US, last night CGP held a panel discussion, 'A Fracturing Alliance? The Future of UK-US Relations', addressing the trajectory of the relationship and its future challenges and opportunities.
๐ฃ๏ธ "There has been a pivot away from foreign policy as something strategic and consistent ... Trump was elected on a platform to end wars and has come in and started a war with Iran that is costing the UK and US at the pump."
@mollyblackall pointed to a growing inconsistency in US foreign policy, putting pressure on longstanding pillars such as NATO and free trade.
