I converted in Iraq

I was raised Christian and like
many young soldiers the war set me to exploring my faith

For the first time in my life I experienced the exhilaration of playing without a safety net, of fully expressing my instincts. My aggression, cunning, tenacity and capacity for violence were assets and not things to apologize for

I explored a bunch of Christian denominations, talked to chaplains and none of them spoke to me. They all took the same basic tone. I even studied Buddhism and Islam.

Then I discovered the beliefs of pre conversion Europe. I discovered Homer Beowulf, the Sagas and Eddas. It encouraged me to express all of those things about myself Christianity wanted me to suppress.

I could fight and kill my adversaries without complex moral justification, without apology. They were my enemies and so I would fight them.

I could rejoice that I was a warrior, I could exalt in being among warriors.

I devoured information about the society my ancestors lived in, their values etc

I never looked back, I was home
