When I wrote a warrant to arrest someone, I included entering their home to search for them. If some guy shows up out of uniform and/or alone and knocks on the door, don't open it, talk to them through the door, if they say they are a cop call the non-emergency number to dispatch or 911 if a person feels unsafe, to find out if it's really a cop.
