BREAKING: STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT OBAMA AND MRS. OBAMA

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

Federal law enforcement and immigration agents have a tough job. But Americans expect them to carry out their duties in a lawful, accountable way, and to work with, rather than against, state and local officials to ensure public safety.

That’s not what we’re seeing in Minnesota. In fact, we’re seeing the opposite.

For weeks now, people across the country have been rightly outraged by the spectacle of masked ICE recruits and other federal agents acting with impunity and engaging in tactics that seem designed to intimidate, harass, provoke and endanger the residents of a major American city. These unprecedented tactics—which even the former top lawyer of the Department of Homeland Security in the first Trump administration has characterized as embarrassing, lawless and cruel—have now resulted in the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens. And yet rather than trying to impose some semblance of discipline and accountability over the agents they’ve deployed, the President and current administration officials seem eager to escalate the situation, while offering public explanations for the shootings of Mr. Pretti and Renee Good that aren’t informed by any serious investigation—and that appear to be directly contradicted by video evidence.

This has to stop. I would hope that after this most recent tragedy, administration officials will reconsider their approach, and start finding ways to work constructively with Governor Walz and Mayor Frey as well as state and local police to avert more chaos and achieve legitimate law enforcement goals.

In the meantime, every American should support and draw inspiration from the wave of peaceful protests in Minneapolis and other parts of the country. They are a timely reminder that ultimately it’s up to each of us as citizens to speak out against injustice, protect our basic freedoms, and hold our government accountable.

I have not been on vacation for four years. I have had no business trips to establish new connections. Currently, I live and work about 70% of the time without electricity. I had to buy batteries. On average, every two weeks I wake up in the middle of the night to explosions. My children have spent hundreds of days sleeping outside their own beds. Some of my friends have been killed; others are on the front line. Some members of my team joined the army, and one of them was wounded. I’ve seen hundreds of videos and photos of destroyed homes, murdered people, torture and executions, and children’s funerals. I may end up in trenches myself.

Do I want the war to end? Of course I do. Much more than you — believe me. So why don’t I support the “peace plan” Trump is pushing?

Because one does not have to be a genius to understand that this plan would bring only a short pause before a much bigger war. If no one but Ukraine uses force to stop Putin, why would he stop? He will come up with another excuse for why his army must move further. And if he knows that neither the U.S. nor the EU will intervene, what will stop him?

I often hear the argument: “I just want people to stop dying.” I want that too — far more than you —b ecause I am one of those people. But if Ukraine withdraws without a fight from the cities in Donbas that it has fortified for years, why do you think that will save lives? About 300,000 people live there. They will either have to flee or stay and undergo “filtration,” which means many will be tortured and executed. Men will be forcibly drafted into the Russian army. And then that army will march further, forcing Ukrainians to kill Ukrainians. Tell me — how does that save lives?

It also means the Russian army will gain the ability to bomb territories that are currently safe. The war will not end. Ukraine will simply lose its fortress cities without a fight. Those who “just want to go home to their families” and support this idea will eventually find themselves fighting again — this time in even worse conditions.

And who says that if they go home, they won’t be quietly taken in the middle of the night and simply disappear? That would be the most logical thing for Russia to do if it takes over. Genocide is the only way to break a nation’s spirit. In the 1990s, they killed 25% of the Chechen nation. They killed millions of Ukrainians before. They killed in Bucha and Izium in 2022, and in other occupied cities — you can find the photos if you want. Why do you think they won’t repeat it?

There is nothing that would protect us from this scenario. That is why there is absolutely no reason for me to support this plan. We need peace — not the horrors of occupation.

Regelmatig gaan wij naar de markt in het oosten van Oekraïne om boodschappen te doen, maar ook om kopers (en soms ook verkopers) een steuntje te geven. Deze keer viel ons oog op een lieve oudere dame die wat spulletjes uit haar eigen huisje probeerde te verkopen. Niet uit hobby, maar omdat ze moet rondkomen van een klein pensioentje en ook haar zieke zoon moet helpen, wiens vrouw onlangs is overleden. Ze had onder andere een pop te koop voor 40 Hrivne (€1), maar echte zakenlieden betalen nooit het gevraagde bedrag en onderhandelen flink over de prijs…

Rond Pasen, een tijd van hoop en medeleven, is het een kleine moeite om iets extra’s voor elkaar te doen. Wij wensen iedereen een vrolijk en vooral vredig Pasen

Nieuwe frontreis – ondanks alles gaan we door

Ondanks de steeds verslechterende situatie in Oekraïne en de hevige aanvallen op onze thuisbasis Dnipro, waarbij de afgelopen weken meerdere burgers zijn omgekomen en tientallen gewond raakten, gaan we door. Ook de laffe aanvallen in Kyiv en andere delen van het land veranderen niets aan onze plannen.

We reizen nu richting het oosten, naar Dnipro de stad waar onze opvanglocatie The Holland House zich bevindt en van waaruit we weer verder gaan om in de Donbas onze hulp te bieden.

Sommige plannen kunnen we vanwege veiligheidsredenen nog niet delen. Wat we wél kunnen vertellen, is dat onze gepantserde auto is uitgerust met een stoorzender (jammer). Zodat we ons (iets veiliger) kunnen bewegen aan het front.

Ook dit keer gaan we zeker weer friet bakken voor oorlogsslachtoffers. We keren waarschijnlijk terug naar het militair ziekenhuis, waar we hen trakteren op lekkers én hulpmiddelen. Daarnaast zijn we opnieuw uitgenodigd in de regio Zaporizja om te bakken en uit te delen.

Zoals jullie van ons gewend zijn, zullen we zoveel mogelijk met jullie delen in de komende periode. Ondertussen blikken we terug op onze vorige reis, een reis met veel hoogte- en dieptepunten.

We blijven helpen. Zolang het kan en nodig is.

Russen komen dichterbij het monument in de Donbas

Elke reis bezoeken we tenminste één keer het monument in de Donbas. Zo ook afgelopen reis en ook deze keer zagen we dat er weer veel is veranderd sinds de vorige keer (slechts enkele maanden geleden) dat we daar waren. Niet alleen stonden er weer meer vlaggen en hingen er nog meer badges maar ook was er een anti-dronenet boven het monument geplaatst.
Dit betekent dat de Russen steeds dichterbij komen, zelfs zo dichtbij zijn dat men zich zorgen maakt over de veiligheid van dit monument en de soldaten en burgers die deze plaats bezoeken om hun gevallen kameraden of familie te herdenken.

Donald Trump and JD Vance didn't show strength today -- they showed weakness.

They have the most vaunted titles in the world: President and Vice President of The United States of America. But the title doesn't make the man. And today both men brought shame to their titles.

A weary warrior was before them. A beleaguered man who has lost thousands of his friends and comrades to the unjust and illegal aggression of an authoritarian leader.

They showed no grace; no magnanimity of spirit; no diplomatic acumen. They were small bullies with big titles and they disrespected the history and legacy of the nation they lead.

Today, Donald Trump acted more like Russia's Putin than America's President.
