Following the tragic incident that occurred at Jattu Market in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday 8 July 2024, in which many persons were killed and many more injured as a result of trees that were felled by the very heavy rains of that morning, members of my team and I made a detour to the market yesterday to commiserate with the grieving community. We also visited one of the hospitals where some of the injured are currently being treated and offered to assist with their medical bills.
I then called the Chairman of the Local Government, Mr. Marvellous Zibiri, to offer our condolences as well as the assurances of our support in these very difficult times.
I also urged the Chairman to prevail on all relevant agencies not to relent in their rescue efforts but to continue to do all they can to expedite the said efforts particularly in view of the fact that there are genuine concerns that more individuals might still be trapped underneath the debris.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families even as we pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of the dead and the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries.
My visit today to the bustling Aduwawa Cattle Market was an eye-opening and deeply nostalgic experience. As I walked through the vibrant livestock trading hub, I was transported back to my days as a Youth Corper in Kano, where I had the privilege of immersing myself in the rich cultural tapestry of the North.
Beyond mere nostalgia, this engagement shed light on the invaluable contributions and unique challenges faced by the Arewa community and livestock sellers in Edo State.
My profound gratitude goes to the leadership and traders in the market for their warm hospitality and for sharing their experiences with me.
Together, we will build an Edo State where unity is celebrated, where every community feels valued and supported, and where the collective strength of our people is harnessed to propel our state towards unprecedented progress.

I like to categorically state that the Obidient Movement is not directorate of any particular political party. Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the Leadership Scorecard Public Lecture on Democracy in Africa, honouring the pivotal role played by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR, in ushering in Nigeria's democratic renaissance.
The event, chaired by Senator Bukola Saraki, who was very ably represented, was also graced by H.E. Prof. Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State, and His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and featured a thought-provoking keynote address delivered by Prof. P.L.O. Lumumba, reflecting on 25 years of democracy in Nigeria.
Gen. Abubakar's leadership in 1999 paved the way for our nation's democratic journey, and his unwavering commitment to nurturing this precious legacy has been a constant guiding force during in all of these 25 years.
I recall that it was Gen. Abubakar who appointed my late uncle, Hon. Justice Ephraim Akpata, as the Chairman of what was then known as the National Electoral Commission (NEC). My uncle, a staunch believer in democratic principles, accepted the appointment on the condition that the commission's independence be enshrined in its name, thus leading to the renaming of the Commission as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Gen. Abubakar's willingness to accept this condition exemplified his commitment to the transition process.
During the event, I was humbled to receive an award as a "Democracy Icon," in recognition of my efforts in upholding democratic tenets during my tenure as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
This past weekend, I had the honour of attending the 70th birthday celebration of Mr. Osamudiamen Oviasu, a remarkable Edo son who is based in the United States of America (USA).
The very well attended event was a testament to the strong bond Mr. Oviasu and his family maintain with their roots, despite living abroad. What struck me most was the diverse array of guests in attendance - a true reflection of the vibrant Edo community, both at home and abroad. It was heartwarming to see Mr. Oviasu and his wife, Engr. (Mrs.) Bose Ogbeifun-Oviasu, the President of the Edo National Association Worldwide (ENAW), surrounded by loved ones from all walks of life.
The Oviasu family have encouraged me to continue to aim for the new Edo State we envision - one that values its people, embraces their contributions, and fosters a sense of belonging, regardless of where they reside. Their unwavering connection to their homeland is an inspiration, reminding us of the importance of nurturing our cultural ties and leveraging the expertise of our diaspora community.
Together, we can build a prosperous future for our great state, where every voice is heard and every contribution is cherished.
