The EP's Internal Market Committee has just adopted a report on the draft directive on transparency of third country interest representation.

The directive is intended to counter foreign interference by introducing national transparency registers for foreign lobbying. 🧵1/

Overall, I think this is quite a balanced compromise. It tackles the most difficult areas of the draft well. However, the fact that transparency registers are unlikely to be effective in addressing foreign interference overall remains. 5/

The US government is once again ramping up its rhetoric on the EU’s Digital Services Act. It is now reportedly considering imposing sanctions on Commission staff responsible for implementing the DSA. This would be an unprecedented move. 🧵⬇️

'The DSA is censorship' is the narrative the US gov. is using as a justification, a claim that has little to no basis in reality. The DSA only provides a framework on how platforms have to deal with e.g. illegal content. What is illegal is defined in national or other EU laws. 5/
