History has been made in Zimbabwe.
The Africa Judges and Jurists Forum (AJJF) warmly congratulates Lady Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza on her historic appointment as the first female Chief Justice of Zimbabwe — a major milestone for judicial leadership, gender inclusion, and constitutionalism in Africa. (Herald Online)
Her appointment reflects the growing transition of women into positions of influence within Africa’s justice sector and sends a powerful message to young women across the continent that leadership at the highest level of the judiciary is attainable.
Zimbabwe now joins a growing number of African countries advancing women’s leadership in apex courts, strengthening public confidence in justice institutions and enriching the administration of justice through diverse perspectives.

Yesterday, the Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) joined Women and Law in Southern Africa, and Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association at the National Access to Justice Indaba held at Rainbow Towers Hotel under the theme, “Centering Women and Girls: Driving Improved Access to Justice Through Inclusive Systems.”
The Indaba brought together justice-sector institutions, policymakers, civil society organisations, and women’s rights advocates to strengthen collaboration and advance practical commitments towards justice systems that are accessible, inclusive, survivor-centred, and responsive to the lived realities of women and girls.
A key call emerging from the discussions was the need for all stakeholders to move beyond dialogue and focus on implementing practical, sustainable solutions that enhance access to justice in Zimbabwe. There is an urgent need for greater commitment to dismantle the barriers that continue to impede access to justice, particularly for women, girls, and other marginalised communities.
At LRF, we remain committed to working with partners to promote inclusive justice systems that uphold the rights, dignity, and equality of all.

Across the world, exchange programmes do more than build skills, they create changemakers. We are proud to celebrate former Norec exchange participants from the Legal Resources Foundation Zimbabwe who are now transforming their experience into meaningful community impact.
Through the Epworth Equality Initiative (EEI), these alumni are advancing access to justice for women and girls in Epworth by addressing critical issues of property rights and gender-based violence. Their work is bringing legal services closer to marginalized communities, empowering women and girls with knowledge of their rights, and strengthening local systems of support.
To date, EEI has provided legal assistance to 125 women and girls, already surpassing its initial target, and has trained 20 community paralegals to offer sustainable, grassroots legal support. In addition, community outreach campaigns have reached more than 200 women and girls across Epworth’s wards, equipping them with essential knowledge on property rights, inheritance, marriage, and protection from gender-based violence.
This is the enduring power of capacity building and international exchange: investing in people who go on to drive lasting change in their communities. We applaud our former Norec participants for turning learning into leadership and for championing justice, equality, and dignity for all.

Yesterday, the Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) officially opened its Gweru Office at Number 41 Claremont Extension 2, marking a significant step in bringing essential legal services closer to communities in need.
The event, attended by a representative from the office of the Honourable Minister of State for Midlands Province, government officials, traditional leaders, and key partners, highlighted a shared commitment to advancing access to justice. Supported by the Australian Embassy’s Direct Assistance Programme (DAP), the office will serve as a vital access to justice centre.
The Gweru Office will expand pro bono legal services, promote legal literacy at the grassroots level, and strengthen alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. By decentralising legal support, LRF is helping communities address legal challenges such as inheritance and land disputes without the burden of travelling long distances.
This milestone reflects LRF’s continued commitment to ensuring that justice is accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of marginalised communities.

The month of March reminds us that when we give women their rights, protection, and equal opportunity, we do not diminish society, we strengthen it. As the month closes, the call remains: Let us continue investing in women’s justice, voices, and leadership, because what we give to women, we gain as a nation.

The Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) is this morning hosting its inaugural launch of Friends of the LRF initiative at Cresta Lodge Msasa. The meeting brings together a dynamic mix of stakeholders, partners, and advocates united by a shared commitment to advancing access to justice in Zimbabwe. Held under the theme “Justice for All: Strengthening Access to Justice Through Partnership,” the gathering is sparking meaningful conversations and renewed energy around collaboration in promoting human rights and access to justice across communities and workplaces.
The morning is unfolding through engaging reflections, thought-provoking insights, and rich dialogue, as leaders in the justice and human rights space exchange perspectives on the current landscape and the urgent need for collective action. The introduction of the Friends of the LRF Initiative is setting the tone for stronger partnerships, while a vibrant panel discussion is tackling the realities of operating within a challenging civic space and exploring practical ways to strengthen access to justice, including within workplaces.
As momentum builds, participants are being called to step forward and “join the circle,” reinforcing a shared responsibility to champion justice, protect rights, and ensure that no one is left behind whether in communities or in the workplace.
The LRF, in partnership with the Law Development Commission and Amnesty International, convened a high-level policy dialogue to examine bottlenecks in amending ATD legislation in Zimbabwe. The discussion focused on gaps, inconsistencies, and provisions requiring reform within the current legal framework. Deliberations were informed by evidence from real-life cases, with participants highlighting practical challenges faced in accessing documentation. Stakeholders identified priority areas for amendment and proposed targeted recommendations to guide ongoing law reform processes. The dialogue reinforced the importance of evidence-based approaches in addressing legislative bottlenecks and strengthening ATD laws.
