🚨🎙️Reporter: Rasmus, everyone is talking about the moment you pushed Jorge Jesus after the final whistle. What actually happened?

🗣️Højlund: I was going to shake his hand. Then I remembered what he did to Cristiano.

🎙️Reporter: You mean Ronaldo?

🗣️Højlund: Of course I mean Ronaldo. That man is my idol. I grew up watching him, learning from him, celebrating like him. And you expect me to smile and shake hands with someone who disrespected him?

🎙️Reporter: But he is the Portugal coach. Isn’t that just football?

🗣️Højlund: No. Football is competition. What happened with Cristiano was disrespect. You don’t treat a player like him that way and then expect everyone to pretend nothing happened.

🎙️Reporter: So you don’t regret pushing him?

🗣️Højlund: Regret? I regret that I even tried to greet him in the first place. I should have just walked past him.

🎙️Reporter: Are you saying you did it because of Cristiano?

🗣️Højlund: 100 percent. I don’t care what people say tomorrow. Cristiano Ronaldo gave inspiration to an entire generation. If someone disrespects my idol, I’m not going to stand there smiling for a handshake just because cameras are watching.

🎙️Reporter: Would you do it again?

🗣️Højlund: I’d show respect to anyone who deserves it. But respect has to go both ways.

🎙️Reporter: One final message for Jorge Jesus?

🗣️Højlund: You can coach Portugal. You can make your decisions. But don’t expect everyone to forget how you treated Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s crazy how a player from Denmark is reminding everyone in that stadium what Ronaldo means to all of them and football

The man they’re taking for granted is being celebrated by people who never even had him as their own

🚨Absolutamente TODO el estadio en Dinamarca haciendo el "SIUUU" de Cristiano Ronaldo vs Portugal tras el gol de Hojlund.

No habrá paz para los traidores.

🇵🇹 PORTUGAL FANS ARE SPEAKING OUT FOR CRISTIANO RONALDO!

Supporters in Lisbon have reportedly taken to the streets to express their frustration over how Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the Portugal camp was handled.

After everything Cristiano Ronaldo has given to the national team throughout his legendary career, many fans believe the situation deserved more respect. 🐐❤️

The controversy surrounding his departure, combined with Rafael Leão taking Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt, has only added to the emotions.

For many Portuguese supporters, Cristiano Ronaldo is more than just a footballer — he represents an entire generation of Portuguese football. 🇵🇹👑

[Manchester Respect💫 @crew_respect]

@MavixRMCF That's it man
I knew he was doing this even when Ronaldo was in Manchester United along with Greenwood.
This is what he is doing to Rashford as well
Mr Carrick needs to make a decision and stand by it to get results if he wants to

@RomzyUnited He is a big rat 🐀

@MavixRMCF Bruno Fernandes is a Rat, I know Him and I know where I'm waiting for him

🚨🎙️Toni Kroos on Bruno Fernandes:

"This match just showed that Bruno Fernandes has always been a problem for Portugal.

His stupid decision to stop playing good football as a midfielder whenever Ronaldo is on the pitch has cost Portugal a lot.

In today's game you could clearly see Bruno playing passes into the final third and even providing two assists but whenever Ronaldo was on the pitch, some how the passes are played to the Goal keeper (Laughs).

At some point, you have to ask yourself why."

🚨 Luis Figo on Portugal immediately giving Cristiano Ronaldo’s No.7 to Rafael Leao following his departure:

“I remember Cristiano’s first years with Portugal.

One day after training, some of the older players were talking and Cristiano was still outside doing something with the ball.

I looked over and said, ‘Does this boy ever go inside?’

Someone said, ‘Leave him. He wants to become the best player in the world.’

I laughed.

Cristiano heard us.

He came over and said, ‘Not just the best. I want to do something for Portugal that people remember.’

I told him, ‘Then you’re going to suffer.’

He looked confused.

I said, ‘Playing for your country is different. When things are good, everybody belongs to you. When things are bad, you still have to come back. That’s the deal.’

He said, ‘I’ll always come back.’

I thought about that conversation today.

Because more than twenty years later, Cristiano finally left a Portugal camp, and his number given to Rafael instantly.

And instead of immediately asking why the boy who told us he’d always come back finally decided to walk away, everybody seems in a hurry to show how quickly football can continue without him.

That worries me.

Not because Portugal cannot continue without Cristiano.

Of course it can.

I worry about the 12-year-old Portuguese boy watching.

Maybe Cristiano is the reason he started playing football. Maybe number seven is on the back of every Portugal shirt he’s ever owned.

One day that boy might become the next star.

He might become somebody we haven’t heard of yet.

And when he arrives at the national team, we’ll tell him exactly what we told Cristiano.

‘This shirt is different.’

Sacrifice for it.

Play hurt for it.

Come whenever you’re called.

Put the country before yourself.

But children aren’t stupid. Footballers aren’t either.

Eventually one of them will ask the question nobody wants to hear:

‘What happens when I’ve given Portugal everything?’

That’s why how you treat Cristiano at the end matters.

I remember another conversation with him years later.

By then he wasn’t the skinny boy anymore. He was captain.

I joked, ‘You said you’d do something Portugal would remember. I think they’ve noticed now.’

He laughed and said, ‘I’m not finished.’

That became Cristiano’s relationship with Portugal.

Never finished.

Lose a tournament, come back.

Get criticised, come back.

Get older, come back.

People tell you the next generation is ready, come back.

Until eventually, something happened and he didn’t come back.

He packed his things and left.

Then he told the Portuguese people that one day he would explain ‘the truth.’

I don’t know what happened inside those conversations, so I’m not going to invent it.

But if a relationship lasting more than twenty years ends like that, the federation shouldn’t only be thinking about the player who walked out of the building.

They should be thinking about the boys watching him walk out.

Because one day Portugal will ask one of them for everything too.

And when that day comes, you don’t want him remembering Cristiano Ronaldo and thinking:

‘Everything?’

I told Cristiano all those years ago that playing for your country means always coming back.

Perhaps there was another part we should have told him.

Your country should give you a reason to.”

🚨🗣️ Rasmus Hojlund on why he hit the SIU Celebration:

“I just wanted to send a strong message to the Portugal team that if they don’t value Cristiano, there’s a whole lot in the world he has inspired and still looks up to him.” 🇩🇰❤️

🚨🇵🇹 PORTUGAL FANS ARE SPEAKING OUT FOR CRISTIANO RONALDO!

Supporters are reportedly protesting over how Cristiano Ronaldo has been treated following his dramatic departure from the Portugal camp.

After everything CR7 has given to the national team, many fans believe his situation deserved a different level of respect. 🐐🇵🇹

From the camp controversy to his No.7 being handed to Rafael Leão… emotions are running high.

CRISTIANO RONALDO IS MORE THAN JUST A PLAYER TO PORTUGAL. ❤️🇵🇹

[SethOfficial @UTD_Seth001]

🚨Luis Nani on the controversy between Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo:

🗣️ Luis Nani: “I spoke to Cristiano after everything happened, and I asked him one question: ‘Brother, are you really leaving Portugal like this?’

“He didn’t answer immediately.

“He just said, ‘Nani, you know me. I can accept being left out. I can accept criticism. What I cannot accept is feeling like everything I’ve given Portugal suddenly means nothing.’

“That sentence stayed with me.

“Because I know Cristiano. I’ve shared a dressing room with him since we were young. I know how competitive he is. If the coach tells him, ‘Cristiano, you’re not playing tonight because I have another tactical plan,’ he might be angry, but he’ll understand.

“But if you make him feel unwanted, that’s different.

“I reminded him of Euro 2016. I reminded him of all the times we travelled together, the nights we suffered, the games where Portugal needed one moment and he gave it to us.

“He just said, ‘Nani, I never asked Portugal to play me because of what I did before. I only wanted them to respect what I can still give.’

“And honestly, that broke something in me.

“Because that’s the Cristiano I know.

“He doesn’t want a favour.

“He doesn’t want people to put him on the pitch because his name is Ronaldo.

“He wants to know that when Portugal calls him, they still believe he can contribute.

“I told him, ‘Maybe Jorge is trying to build the next Portugal. Maybe he wants the younger players to take responsibility.’

“He said, ‘Then let them. I will never stop them. But don’t build the future by disrespecting the past.’

“That was when I realised this wasn’t really about one game or one benching.

“It was about communication.

“You can tell Cristiano, ‘Your role has changed.’

“You can tell him, ‘You’re not going to play every match.’

“You can even tell him, ‘There are games where we need younger legs.’

“But you have to look him in the eyes and tell him the truth.

“Because Cristiano can handle the truth.

“I remember when we were young, we used to argue about everything. Football, training, who was better, who should take the free-kick. [laughs]

“But even then, I knew one thing about him.

“He would rather hear something painful from a friend than something comfortable from somebody who doesn’t mean it.

“So when I saw him leave the Portugal camp, I didn’t immediately ask, ‘What did Cristiano do?’

“I asked, ‘What happened between two people who should have been able to solve this inside the dressing room?’

“Because this isn’t just a player and a coach anymore.

“This is Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

“And after everything he has given that shirt, if this really is the beginning of the end, then I hope they find a way to end it with respect.

“Cristiano doesn’t need Portugal to protect his legacy.

Portugal needs to remember that it was privileged to have Cristiano Ronaldo protecting its shirt for more than two decades.”
