📣New paper out!🔔
We quantify deep/viscous subduction interface rheology by integrating field observations, numerical models, and experimental flow laws. This provides us new insights into viscosity and strength variations along subduction zones.

I'm currently working on massive panoramas of our skies. They're more work than traditional astrophotography images, and are forcing me to learn a lot about the craft.
Here's a small segment of one of them, showing the neighboring Andromeda galaxy. The color is 100% accurate.
Our research group (@sgt_ethz) is advertising 2 PhD positions to start Summer or Fall 2025-- pass this along if you know of interested applicants!

Strongest aurora in 20 years this evening.
This is the astounding view as far south as Switzerland a short while ago …on top of Jungfraujoch 😍😍

In 1951, Adelbert Ames created the mind-boggling ‘Ames Window’. It’s so effective that even when you know how it works you can’t break the illusion

I'm so excited to share with you "Viewing the Rock World", an outreach project based on a 3D-printable thin section viewer that anyone can make! Looking for teachers, educators, student groups, anyone interested in participating! Check out https://t.co/PMPvvQsfu7 for more info.
👏Congrats to 2 of our M.S. students who gave excellent thesis presentations this morning!
Nora Schweizer working with @clodmad and Markus Rast on the COSC-II drill core in Sweden
&
@DominicH98 working with @WhitneyBehr, @JesusMunozMont and @LTokle on Syros island in Greece!
New paper out on blueschist deformation experiments!!! 🚨🚨🚨 From the exps we developed a flow law and some of the first rheological constraints on diffusional properties in amphibole. @sgt_ethz . Check it out #OpenAccess#microboudinage

The @sgt_ethz group is very active at #EGU2023 this year!
Here's our full lineup of presentations: https://t.co/nijuajqUUd
We hope you'll drop by our talks and posters as we'd welcome feedback! We'll tweet more details as the week progresses.
Watch this, and tell me you did not feel something. Football fans in Turkey throw toys down on the field to collect for the children in the earthquake zone. Such a beautiful and heartwrenching scene of love. Such big hearts.
This is hilarious. Aldi created an Amazon-like “grab and go, zero staff” store in the Netherlands.
Except no customers enter b/c to do so, you need to register *with a credit card*. The majority of the population in the Netherlands doesn’t have a credit card! They have debit.
A swarm of earthquakes has rattled under the town of Pahala, Hawaii, for decades, surging to hundreds of quakes a week in 2019. Now scientists finally pinned down the source & mapped the island's underbelly.
And he data are just WOW.

📢Are you working on rock microstructures and texture analyses? Do you study brittle and/or ductile conditions and aim to constrain deformation mechanisms?
Please consider submitting an abstract to #EGU23 session TS1.5 in Vienna (April 23rd – 28th)
