Transparency International condemns the repression and arbitrary and enforced disappearances of journalists, activists and defenders of fundamental freedoms in Venezuela.

The unprecedented wave of repression that Venezuela is experiencing prior to Nicolas Maduro’s inauguration as president scheduled for today, aims to instil fear and to silence citizen demands for the results of the presidential elections on July 28 to be respected.

We call for the immediate release of those who are unjustly imprisoned for exercising their fundamental rights, and for the safeguarding of the basic freedoms and guarantees of all Venezuelans.

We demand that the Maduro government and its collaborators end the violence and recognise the will of the Venezuelan people expressed at the ballot box to live in a democratic country free of corruption.
