Pakistani national killed in fatal pitbull attack in North West

A 39-year-old man has died after being allegedly attacked by two pitbull dogs at a residence in Vryburg in the early hours of Thursday, 1 January 2026.

According to North West police, Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) were called to the scene around 02h30 am and transported the severely injured man to a local hospital. He later succumbed to his wounds on Friday evening.

Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, police spokesperson, said the victim believed to be a Pakistani national was renting a room at the property where the attack occurred.

Officers found him in the surgical ward with multiple wounds and scratches on his hands and legs, consistent with dog bites.

Preliminary investigations suggest this was not the first incident involving the same animals. A related case against the dogs is pending and is due to be heard at the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court in February.

Following consultations with the owner, the two pitbulls were euthanised on Saturday, 3 January 2026. No arrests have been made, and police have opened an inquest as they continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
