This 1862 Belgian coin was found under Mead’s Tavern porch! It was minted during the American Civil War and produced under King Leopold I. The coin features a star within a shaded circle and on the reverse, it features a rampant lion. @hurtandproffitt@HistoryLU#NewLondonVA

The layer of 20th-century deposit covering the site was removed in the Mead's Tavern porch excavation this week. This layer contained a mixture of artifacts including modern plastic and a large cent dated to 1798. These photos highlight how much has been excavated this month!
