Dr U brought in pawpaws from her orchard today. Feel free to pick some up outside of NG-130. Pawpaws are a native fruit with a creamy texture that tastes like a cross between bananas and mangoes. Supposedly, chilled pawpaw fruit was a favorite dessert of George Washington.
This afternoon LVC’s Ecology class sampled salamanders for the Student Network for Amphibian Pathogen Surveillance (SNAPS). Samples collected by LVC students will be tested for Bsal—an emerging amphibian disease. #LVCEnvi#LVCresearch#LVCWTRP
It was a busy afternoon up at LVC’s Research Preserve. We put up acorn traps, collect spotted lanternflies, took grape cuttings, and set up the first sampling quadrant for an Honor’s project. Thanks to Emily & Abby Sausser, Ilyssa McLaughlin, Ben Smith, and Aly Sager! #LVCEnvi
Field work begins! Sydney Frey and Charles Katona helped Dr U out in the Research Preserve this afternoon. Does it look like deer might have an impact in the woods? #LVCEnvi#LVCResearch
Ilyssa McLaughlin & Hannah Horengic spent the summer conducting stream channel and riparian assessments for the Quittapahilla Watershed Association.
Abigail Corbin was LVC's first Environmental Science major. She now works for the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. #LVCEnvi#LVCalum

Emily also shared photos of British soldier lichen she recently discovered. Lichen are symbiotic organisms that are comprised of algae/cyanobacteria and fungi. Scientists use lichen as bioindicators of atmospheric pollution.
Emily Sausser (BIO '24, ENVI minor) is spending the summer as a Research Assistant at Penn State. She is conducting environmental chemistry analyses and identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates--like this Plecoptera! #LVCEnvi#LVCBio
Summer research started up this week! Alex is helping Dr Becker study how spotted lanternflies are influencing our local insect communities, while Paul is setting up some experiments on live staking with Dr Urban. #LVCEnvi#LVCResearch#GoLVC
Congratulations to Daelyn Stabler (BIO, ENVI minor) for being this year’s H. Anthony Neidig Award winner! Daelyn is off to University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine! Congratulations, Daelyn!
