🇱🇻 Latvia condemns Russia’s deliberate hostile campaign against the Baltic states, including baseless claims regarding alleged permission for the use of Baltic airspace or territory for military operations against targets in Russia.

❗️Russia lies again❗️This time it is SVR or the External Intelligence Service running a disinformation campaign against Latvia.
✅FACT: Latvia does NOT provide airspace for attacks on Russia. That has been explained several times to Russian representatives.

Welcome to @UNODC, Dr. Monica Juma!
Latvia congratulates you on assuming the role of Executive Director and looks forward to working together to advance multilateralism and tackle organized crime, corruption, and drug-related challenges for a safer world.
8 May 1945 marked the end of the Second World War in Europe. However, for the Baltic states 🇱🇻🇱🇹🇪🇪 it did not bring freedom — occupation and violence continued.
Soviet propaganda described the occupation as “liberation”. Russia continues these lies, distorts historical facts and seeks to downplay the consequences of the occupation for the Baltic states.
We commemorate the victims of the war and remember history as it truly was.
Words matter. History matters — especially now.

As always glad to speak to my friend @andrii_sybiha of Ukraine.
Russia’s war against Ukraine is the cause of all drone incidents. Contrary to Russian propaganda, neither Latvia nor any Baltic states have allowed their airspace or territory to be used for drone attacks.
On 8 August 1940, the occupying Soviet authorities decided to terminate the activities of Latvia’s 🇱🇻 diplomatic and consular missions abroad, a decision which the majority of envoys and consuls refused to comply with.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was effectively dismantled. At the same time, Latvia’s foreign service continued to operate uninterruptedly outside Latvia throughout the entire period of occupation, ensuring institutional and state continuity.
The declaration by the Acting U.S. Secretary of State Sumner Welles on 23 July 1940 in the Western countries consolidated a policy of non‑recognition of the incorporation of the Baltic states into the Soviet Union for nearly fifty years. It made it possible for Latvian legations to continue their work in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, as well as for the Permanent Delegation to the League of Nations and 72 consular missions.
History matters – especially now!

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union are equally responsible for the outbreak of the Second World War. On 23 August 1939, they signed a non-aggression treaty, the so-called Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, supplemented by secret protocols. This created preconditions for the occupation of sovereign European states.
The capitulation of Nazi Germany on 8 May 1945 did not bring freedom to Latvia and the Baltic states. The Soviet Union re‑occupied the Baltic states, and continued forced Sovietisation and Russification of the occupied countries behind the “Iron Curtain”.
