Smith joins Chelsey Shumpert (2018) and Amy Philamlee (2015) as the only Lady Bulldogs to be named All-Americans since Union joined @NCAADII.
Smith wraps up her fantastic Union career as one of just two players in Union’s history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists.
Jada Smith has been named a First-Team All-American by the WBCA. This is the third Lady Bulldog to be given this honor since 2015.
Smith averaged 18.8 points per game on 54 percent shooting along with averaging five rebounds and just over five assists a game.
The recent announcement from the NCAA does affect the South Region tournament we are hosting this weekend. We are in communication with NCAA on the implications of this announcement. Attendance to the basketball games will be limited. We will release more info as available.
@garretplumlee Absolutely! Part of the reason I love Twitter is because of sports discussions like these.
Lee will be a great host and it will be a fun tournament to watch. Lee/UU part 3 would provide another game of the year candidate, just as it has twice before!
@garretplumlee I'm with you on that. No chance the NCAA responds haha. The MC losses absolutely had to have played a part and Lee beating Lander early on is huge, you're right.
Looking at the other elements of Union and Lee's seasons, it is super close. It's a question that needed to be asked.
@garretplumlee Like I said before, I’m not discrediting the phenomenal season that Lee has had. I know some wonderful people at Lee. I also know Union has more bad losses, but my point is when it’s this close, there needs to be an official reason as to why, especially with how the season ended.
@garretplumlee My point is that you can’t just use bad losses as the only argument against Union being the #1 seed, especially when Union had the most road wins in the GSC (9), a better record against the tournament field, and as many wins against ranked opponents as Lee (3).
@drew3cook @DLytleJr Losses do matter, I agree. And Union’s losses likely kept them from hosting, but Lee’s losses are just as crucial considering Union is 5-1 against the tournament field, while Lee is just 4-3. Both teams have very similar resumes.
UU vs. DSU and UAH: 4-0
Lee vs. DSU and UAH: 2-2
@garretplumlee Keep in mind also that MC and Valdosta both finished 10-10 in GSC play and MC held the tiebreaker over VSU. Union best VSU twice.
If we’re going to discuss margin of victory as well, the fact UU has beaten VSU by 40 and UAH by 27, both teams Lee has lost to, must be mentioned.
Resume comparison between Lee, Tampa, and Union:
Lee:
26-4 (17-3 GSC)
Lost in GSC Semis (#2 seed)
8-3 road record
3-1 against ranked opponents
24-4 against South Region opponents.
Opponent’s average win percentage (D2): 50.3%
Simple RPI (per @herhoopstats): 14th
Record against the Region’s top 10 teams:
Union: 9-1
Lee: 8-3
Tampa: 3-3
To me, this is one of the biggest arguments for Union getting the #1 seed, along with the fact the Lady Bulldogs won both the GSC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.
