Practicing Ethnic Studies community responsiveness meant centering the voices, knowledges and hearts of our youth and familias. We learned from their creation. #heartwork#ethnicstudies#communityresponse#napavalley
Heartwork & In Lak’Ech was central to the LYP. Our 5th-12th grade Ethnic Studies pathway program served at 5 schools, influencing, transforming & becoming an instrumental part of each school’s community culture. Artist: LYP youth. #heartwork#ethnicstudies#napavalley
In the LYP we showed up for each other cada día. We supported each other cada día. We navigated a system not built for us cada día. We lived and practiced In Lak’Ech cada día. ¡LYP por la vida! #heartwork#ethnicstudies#napavalley#inlakech
In Lak'ech
Tú eres mi otro yo. / You are my other me.
Si te hago daño a ti, /If I do harm to you,
Me hago daño a mi mismo. /I do harm to myself.
Si te amo y respeto, /If I love and respect you,
Me amo y respeto yo. /I love and respect myself. #heartwork#ethnicstudies#napavalley
Our greatest achievement was to witness our youth grow to love themselves. When society didn’t see them, was otherized or saw them as the problem, we taught them to love themselves. Dignidad is measured in our hearts & actions. That’s Ethnic Studies!
Our LYP story & the institutional dismantling of the only Ethnic Studies program in the Napa Valley has been published in the Ethnic Studies Journal, Kalfou, “The ‘Essential Worker’ in the Time of Corona: Ethnic Studies and a Legacy Canceled in the Napa Valley.” #ethnicstudies
Youth created:
- introductions (w. inlak’ech) explanation of in lak’ech
- 3 or 4 legacy student stories
- reflections of the stories
- Heartwork from within to not fix us but to help us grow into humanized human beings
- Reflections
- Close out (Isang Bagsak) #ethnicstudies
The Legacy Youth Project was beyond a class and curriculum. Our 5th-12th Ethnic Studies program was a practice of developing consciousness, heartwork, healing, service, joy, love, solidarity and In Lak’Ech. #heartwork#ethnicstudies#napavalley
