@Jonathan_Witt By that logic the US shouldn’t be having diesel at a record 6.50 a gallon at their pumps since they have enough refining capacity for their own needs 🙈 100% war-linked (mostly Middle East but also Russia)
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse Ultimately neither side is better off. Iran’s economy is even more poked and their people worse off but the regime remains and is even more emboldened. While US failed to remove the regime or the nuclear/proxy threat. US holding a stronger position (militarily) isn’t saying much

Im not going to try convince you when it is well documented what was said in the early days of the war by Trump and Netanyahu
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse I’m calling a spade a spade. US’s military campaign has been devastating but to what end? You don’t go to war to blow up as much shit as possible without a clear measurable objective. Nuclear & ballistic missile programme, terror proxies & now a closed strait… what has US won?!
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse Of course the greatest navy in the world can. You’d just incur massive casualties doing so. Add that to the fact well over half of US’s intercepters (THAAD & Patriots) & long range missiles have been exhausted…& over $40b spent on the war. Do you honestly think it was worth it?
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse That was the fallback goal when regime change failed. Bibi tricked Trump into thinking it was possible and despite US intelligence warning to the contrary he foolishly went ahead with it anyway. Now he’s stuck in a war he can’t easily exit without it looking like defeat
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse I have not moved the goalpost once. You continually downplay Iran’s effectiveness in closing the strait and don’t appreciate what it means for the US and its allies in the region. Did you feel like you were winning when Trump folded to Iran’s demands in the unpopular MOU?
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse Your focus on physical presence in a region vs strategic influence (as I’ve described) is the problem. There is a bigger picture. Oh and btw the USS Abraham Lincoln and the other 20 or so warships are stationed in the Gulf of Oman to avoid Iran’s mosquito fleet & drone swarms
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse I would also add that degrading their military capacity at massive cost (not just fiscally but politically for Trump at home and the US in the Middle East) for no strategic gain only makes the defeat more painful for the US. Iran has been battered but the IRGC remains in power
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse 2/2) and the strait was open before the war. And everyone knows now that the US not only lack the appetite for a ground incursion but are also critically low on missile & intercepters… so Iran will continue to be able to weaponise the strait for leverage in negotiations. Defeat
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse Primary objective of this war for the US has become reopening the strait for vital energy shipping flows (for both economic & geopolitical reasons). We are talking about “control” in this context and the US right now can’t ensure safety. Strategic loss no matter how you paint it!
@Rockerbaby_186@tedlieu@WhiteHouse You do know the whole point of “total control” of the strait in the real world is being able to ensure safe passage of vessels navigating it, right? If the US can’t militarily degrade Iran enough to remove their threat of disruption then they do not have “full” control.
