Physician-scientist training is under strain. To understand why, we followed up all MB-PhD graduates from @ucl:
131 graduates published >5,800 papers, cited 3x the field norm
We hope the identified barriers inform change for all physician-scientists

@jpe266@NC_Renic Same. All the reviewers were like this is great, landmark, etc without a single significant critique and the editor rejected it after months. Maddening.
When you intubate a 23-weeker in the delivery room, and the baby sits comfortably on 21 percent, do you still give surfactant?
In the episode we released on Monday, Roger Soll flips his own script. He has spent his career talking about intubating to administer surfactant. Here he argues the reverse. If you intubated that baby because they needed respiratory support, then that baby needs surfactant, and the FiO2 is not what decides it. The mode of ventilation trumps the oxygen requirement.
If the tube is in, the surfactant should follow.
He knows this is contested and says so plainly. But it puts pressure on the small habits many of us default to: confirm the tube, get up to the unit, settle the baby, wait and see whether the oxygen climbs. Soll calls that delay a mistake. Worth asking what actually happens in your unit at 3am.

This is indeed a big problem in Pediatric Residency Education. Only 13% & 44% making competency on flow-inflating bag and T-piece respectively. Ventilation skill is critical to neonatal resuscitation. But I'm sure the board that gutted resident time in the NICU and then gutted Neonatal fellowship time will fix it. @EBNEO@AmerAcadPeds@ab_peds https://t.co/FbQt7EZj1Q
Our urgent call in BMJ is out: >3400 signed letter calling on Word Medical Associations to STOP THEIR SILENCE. Dr. Abu Safiya is imprisoned by Israel >18 months with no charges. Solitary confinement. Beatings. His life threatened. This must End. 🧵

NIH grants have been under political scrutiny since 2025. But what does the screening process actually look like?
For @nature, I spent a month digging into leaked docs. We've published a list of 235 words being flagged by an internal AI tool. And so much more. 🧵

Scientific meetings should be places where people can engage in difficult conversations and know that their voices will not be censored.
Appreciate this statement from @atscommunity.
Looking forward to #ATS2027 in New Orleans.

🚨HOLY SHIT: I was just listening to Marjorie Taylor Greene and she confirmed Donald Trump pushed the government shutdown HIMSELF so they couldn’t vote to release the Epstein files.
This should be a major scandal.
Protected time for early-career investigators matters more when external funding is scarce, not less. If we only invest in people who already have grants, we've confused output with potential. 2/4
