Ese es el Messi que toda Europa vio a partir de 2016: caminando, intrascendente, con la mirada al suelo y más pendiente de reclamar que de marcar diferencias. Ese también era el Messi de Argentina hasta 2016, duramente cuestionado por su propia afición.

Después empezaron a organizar Copas América cada dos años y, finalmente, en 2021, entre polémicas arbitrales, consiguió su primera Copa América.

A partir de ahí llegaron los beneficios arbitrales que revitalizaron su carrera. Pero el costo para su imagen pública terminó siendo enorme: hoy es, para muchísima gente, el futbolista con mayor rechazo del mundo.

Y ni siquiera hoy, cuando el árbitro anuló un gol a España, les alcanzó para ser campeones. Eso pasa cuando enfrentas a selecciones de primer nivel.

Al final no solo perdió la Copa del Mundo; también perdió su credibilidad.
