Yesterday, we celebrated a milestone for public housing: the first NYCHA development to reach financial closing through the Public Housing Preservation Trust.
Thanks to the Trust, we're able to tap into much more, and more flexible, federal funding to make improvements -- starting with a full $607 million modernization at Nostrand Houses in Brooklyn, and more on the way.
This milestone is a testament to years of work by activists, staff from NYCHA, the Preservation Trust and the City, and most of all, NYCHA residents who have fought to reach this day.

If I were to get a regular kind of job, I can tell you one job that'd be high on my list:
Union Laborer.
$40+/hr, can journey out in less than 2 years, job security, huge union that has work all over the US, and the job itself is diverse. Laborers do all kinds of work; it's never the same thing day in day out year after year like with some trades.
And from what I hear, a lot of laborers can duck in and out of unemployment pretty easily -- if you want unpaid time off, it's not as big of a deal as it can be with other union trades.
To me, the flexibility, job variety, and quicker journey-out timeline compensate for the lower pay and prestige. LIUNA would definitely be in my top 3 jobs if I went the wage work route, which is also handy because they're hiring all over the US right now.
