Every word of this Sam Harris essay on Israel is obviously true and it’s crazy that we live in an intellectual environment where this is called contrarianism.
I agree with every word Sam Harris says here about Israel, and I'll go further. The preoccupation with this country is antisemitism. There is no other explanation for how that, of all the world's many brutal dictatorships and ongoing famines, all of Europe and the Middle East is obsessed with this tiny scrap of land and what the people that rule it defensively and democratically, in a sea of aggressive tyrants, are doing. Any country subjected to such unrelenting scrutiny by those already predisposed to be suspicious of it would come out looking evil, and that's before the lying and semantic games.
If you believe that no criticism of Israel can be antisemitic, and that the antisemitic Arab world is not interested in destroying it, with the applause of most of antisemitic Europe, I'm sorry, but you live in an alternate reality and we have nothing to discuss.
This is an argument that has been repeated often for many years, and here's the thing:
Everyone on all sides of the conflict knows deep down that this is 100% true.
The number of people who romanticize having a disabled child is incredibly disturbing. To those who are harassing that couple by suggesting they “put it up for adoption,” I challenge you to take action and adopt a disabled child. There are many children in need of loving homes.
Having to make a decision about whether to proceed with a wanted pregnancy after a diagnosis of a serious congenital decision is one of the worst tragedies a family can face.
The overwhelming majority of people faced with this awful choice choose to terminate their pregnancies. People who are steadfast in their opposition to abortion will have one when faced with the prospect of raising a baby that is unlikely to survive childhood or that will be so severely disabled as to require lifelong care.
My position is that people who are not dealing with this situation shouldn’t tell people who are dealing with it what they should do, because people facing the reality behave differently than people considering it as a hypothetical. I think cases like this are the strongest argument for abortion and policies requiring people who discover serious congenital defects early in a pregnancy to carry to term are less popular than policies allowing men to play women’s sports.
That said, maybe people should make their agonizing life decisions in private instead of using them for content.
You didn't have this same energy when you wholeheartedly endorsed BDS, which is also collective punishment, and it's against a country that got invaded whereas Russia is the attacker in this scenario. Dedicated to doing the worst at every opportunity.
I have always, and will continue, to stand with the Ukrainian people and unequivocally condemn Putin’s illegal and brutal invasion. I voted against the Ukraine Support Act because of its inclusion of broad economic sanctions. Time and again, sanctions like these fail to achieve their stated goals while inflicting real suffering on ordinary people. Opposing Russian aggression does not require us to support policies that punish ordinary civilians who did not ask for this war.
The foreign policy establishment continues to return to the same failed playbook and expects different results. Economic sanctions fail to achieve their desired goals and in most cases are counterproductive to ending war.
I remain committed to supporting diplomacy, peace, and justice for the Ukrainian people affected by this horrific conflict. But I could not in good conscience support legislation that wages economic warfare on innocent civilians.
