The Governor hosted a morning tea at Government House in support of patronage organisation The Lady Musgrave Trust, which is Queensland's oldest charity and a champion for homeless women. @Lady_Musgrave
Thank you to all those who attended today both in person and online. We also extend our thanks to each of our speakers and all those who made this event possible. A special mention to our major sponsor the @QldGov and venue sponsor @QUT Centre of Justice.
We need to be comforting children of domestic violence survivors while they are in police stations. We need to be preventing that trauma and providing resources for mums to reduce them from censoring their comments to the police. - Cindy Barden, Creator, Lil Bug Love #HW2022
“The police have a critical part to play in crisis but when we get involved it’s too late. Why do women and children have to leave their homes? Why can’t we move men? We are for the first time in a long time we are collaborating.” - Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd, @QldPolice
👉Most girls we see have no idea that consent can be retracted at any time
👉Most boys struggle with understanding consent as it isn’t modelled at home
👉Most kids are coming to terms with intergenerational violence
⁃Rachael Pascua, Coordinator, R4Respect, @YFSlogan
Experience of adversity in adolescence changes the brain. The negative behaviours we are talking about today are a response to a decrease in brain health. - Sheryl Batchelor, Founder, Yiliyapinya Indigenous Corporation #HW2022
Offenders are getting bored with #pornography and with the accessibility to exploitive material of children only a few clicks away on the internet it is becoming increasingly prevalent.
- Hilda Sirec, @AusFedPolice
👉 #pornography becomes the loudest voice in the room in the really formative years with no additional information
👉Seeing adult experiences at a much younger age
👉More difficulty naming an experience as sexual violence
- Kerrin Bradfield, Clinical Sexologist #HW2022
Hilda Sirec from @AusFedPolice
👉 We don’t refer to material as child pornography, that shows complacency. A child can not consent to being involved. It’s child abuse material.
👉 Every 7 minutes a webpage shows abuse of a child.
#HW2022
👉There’s a strong link between accessibly of #porn and violence against women.
👉Men usually access porn ~3 years before they enter into a sexual relationship, which educates them about what sex is and shapes their view of women and intimate relationships. #HW2022
We saw Hannah’s experience, but we didn’t know that it had a name. Now we know it is coercive control. We wanted to start the conversation, educate on coercive control and make it law. To do this we need to collaborate. - Sue and Lloyd Clarke, Small Steps 4 Hannah.
“We think about women at the centre of the conversation today. Over the last four years we’ve seen a quadrupling of women and children escaping family and domestic violence presenting to housing service centres.” - The Hon. Leeanne Enoch MP
Today is the final day of Domestic and Family Violence Month, but it doesn't mark the end of the work that needs to be done to support Qld women who are doing in tough.
These conversations need to continue to happen all year round.

A staggering 96.8% of women and children seeking out homelessness services are not currently receiving the safe and stable long-term housing they need. It's a frightening, but all too real, statistic.
