Andrew Watt discusses making "Perfect Celebrity" with Lady Gaga in new interview for People Magazine

"I got to the studio five minutes before her. Whatever was in my head, I just started playing the synth, and the second it came out of the speakers, it was 10 seconds, 30 seconds of me playing before she had heard it, and already started writing. So it was one of those really fluid things. And the second she came up with that concept, I remember her saying, "Oh, this is the song that I always should have written." It felt instantly like a song that was already in her discography, even though it was a brand-new thing she was coming up with. She just wrote it in one fell swoop. It was one of those 20-minute songs. She's incredible. She's a force. When the inspiration is right and she hears what she needs to hear, she just flows like no one else."

Andrew Watt says working with Lady Gaga in the studio is “a lot of fun” and reveals her writing process in recent interview for People:

“[It is] a lot of fun. A lot of laughs. We were laughing nonstop. [It was] also extremely intense but in a good way. She’s there thinking about the entire world she’s going to build when she does a song. There’s layers to what she does. First, she has to figure out the notes and the lyrics and the vibe of what she’s going to do and create that. That, for a lot of people, is where it ends. You write a song, you put your vocal on it. Boom, that’s it. Not for Gaga. She then takes that song home, figures out which part of her is going to sing the narrative, how she has to sing it.

Does she have to sing it harder? Does she have to sing it softer? How is she going to deliver the vocal? She learns every inflection of what she did and comes back [and] sings it for hours and hours until she finds the right character.

Then you’re trying to have a conversation with her, and she’s not there. She went somewhere, and then she comes back, she’s like, ‘Sorry, I was thinking about how this is going to look on stage, how this is the world that I’m going to build for this.’ She sees every single detail of what her art is going to be and how grand a scale it’s going to become. It’s unlike anyone else I’ve ever worked with.”

Highlights from Gaga's "Abracadabra" Song Exploder episode

- Abracadabra began during a session where Gaga, Andrew Watt and Cirkut were working on a mid-tempo song that didn't make the cut for MAYHEM
- When Cirkut first played his idea for the track, Andrew Watt said "that could be a hard beat to write over, cause it's so busy" and Gaga was like "watch me"
- The first words Gaga wrote for the song were "Like a poem said by a lady in red you hear the last few words of your life"
- Gaga and Andrew wrote the verses on piano and guitar
- The track went through 3 different versions of production before they landed on the House style
- New York and ballroom culture, as well as her early days in the city and making dark music is what inspired her while writing the song
- She changed a lyric after the song had already been mixed; "Don't waste time on a feeling, use your passion no return" originally ended with "it's your turn"
- Gaga says the song embodies everything that "Lady Gaga" is to her; "the intervals of the melody, the made up words, the fantastic idea mixed with these heavy dance beats with rock instrumentation like, this blend of things is what Lady Gaga is to me"
- Making this song helped her to "take ownership over something that used to run [her] life in a negative way"

Lady Gaga reveals initial lyrics “Don’t waste time on a feeling. Use your passion. It’s your turn.” were changed after the song was mixed because she felt it was wrong. She felt “it’s your turn” was signaling something that the song was already saying and she didn’t want a second verse that revisits the first one without going anywhere new. “No return” instead felt like she was raising the stakes like “you can’t give up”.
