Colin Kaepernick’s new book, The Perilous Fight, details tensions between the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season—when he knelt during the national anthem to protest social injustice—and Jay-Z, who once called Kaepernick an “iconic figure.”

The relationship began fraying in 2019, when Kaepernick settled a collusion lawsuit against the NFL, and Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, partnered with the league to consult on Super Bowl halftime entertainment and other initiatives. This summer, Jay-Z took a jab at Kaepernick at a Yankee Stadium show.
