AAC CONDEMNS WIKE’S THREAT AGAINST JOURNALIST SEUN OKINBALOYE, DEMANDS IMMEDIATE ARREST AND PROSECUTION
The African Action Congress (AAC) condemns in the strongest possible terms the threat issued by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, against journalist, producer, and broadcaster Seun Okinbaloye.
Such a threat directed at a media professional is reckless, dangerous, and utterly unacceptable in any society that claims to be governed by the rule of law. It strikes at the very heart of press freedom and democratic accountability.
The AAC states that this development cannot be dismissed as an isolated outburst. Rather, it reflects a troubling pattern of violent rhetoric and intimidation long associated with Wike in the public domain. Over the years, multiple media reports have carried allegations linking him to threats against officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and to a broader climate of violence in Rivers State.
It is a matter of public record that while serving as Governor of Rivers State, Wike was captured in widely circulated audio recordings allegedly threatening to kill INEC officials who refused to cooperate in electoral malpractice. These revelations, alongside other reports of violence and political intimidation, underscore the urgent need for accountability and a thorough, independent investigation into his conduct—past and present.
For these reasons, the AAC calls on all relevant security agencies to act immediately and without fear or favor. No public official, regardless of status or political influence, should be allowed to threaten journalists and evade accountability.
The party therefore demands the immediate arrest and prosecution of Nyesom Wike over this alleged threat and any other credible allegations of criminal conduct that may be established through lawful investigation.
Nigeria’s democracy cannot survive in an environment where those in positions of power openly menace the press and intimidate citizens with impunity. The protection of journalists and the preservation of civil liberties must remain non-negotiable pillars of a just society.
