Serving the NH Lakes Region from Black Cat Is. on Lake Winnipesaukee. 17-mile webcam view, water temp, forecasts. An understaffed online labor of love.
Our area has a risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Any individual storm cell that gains enough strength may produce a tornado on the low end of the intensity scale. Keep an eye to the sky and listen for any local warnings that may be issued today.
@TheTKWeatherXp On this day in 1912 Titanic sailed the spring roller coaster from warmth into a cold front, the lingering of winter 1911-12. Seems similar to current pattern. After dinner they were under the big blue H. Survivors reported stormy trip to NYC, prob warm front west of the high.
ICE OUT declared Sunday morning at 6:59. The overflight by Emerson Aviation found that @CruiseNH MS Mount Washington can navigate between all ports ice-free. That makes it official. Areas of ice remain in a few protected areas but will likely melt in warm temps this week. #nhwx
Today in 1912 Titanic left Ireland for NYC after a winter like what we just had. Arctic high at 1037mb pushed cold over Boston with snow for Fenway Park's first-ever game (Sox-Harvard), then moved offshore, east. Those aboard Titanic enjoyed the warm sector ahead of it, for now.
@ericfisher If I were at the video control room I would've put "Jaws" in the splashdown scene (cue John Williams score). The part where he pulls down the rescue chopper, but replace it w/ space capsule. Cut to clip of horrified kids on mangled sailboats, back to wide angle of Navy vessels...
@TheTKWeatherXp Time for annual iceout watch. Emerson Aviation at KLCI finds only Ctr Harbor & Wolfeboro Bay still iced. To be official the MS Mt Washington must be able to sail between all ports. Lily Pond near klci rwy 8 thawed a few days ago and is a "10 day marker" for Winni.
@TheTKWeatherXp Daytime this late in season it's sun radiation vs snow rate. Microfactors for modeled accum: Cloud thickness (dark), slope dir (N), shade or shadows, 50' of elev makes a diff., Even N side of a mulch mound under tree is a "slope"! Great setup for teaching viewers solar science!
@TheTKWeatherXp April snow around the lake is so elev-dependent that 200 ft often makes a big difference. Meredith can have wet hwy at town docks but drive another mile & up a rise, you get surprised with slippery road at the top. Snowfall melts all day, then at sunset, BAM! Sudden accum.
@TheTKWeatherXp Snowfall at Lynnfield (aka Mom's house) was 0.4" this morning. Melt began as soon as (OVC obscured) sun got above the trees and it's all gone at 1 pm.
#Snow reports this morning: 3.5 inches at Center Sandwich (near S.Tamworth) and 3 inches at Ashland. South of the #nhlakesregion at 1030 am temps have risen above freezing but only a little: You won't find 40 F until you reach Nantucket or NYC. #nhwx#spring2026
Snow showers are on break for now but back later today/tonight. Best accumulation after sunset, above 700' elev & on N-facing slopes (ex.- @Gunstockmtn ) . Slick roads especially on tops of hills along US-3, 25, 25B, 109 in Sandwich, 113, 171, 175, more. #nhwx#spring2026
@TheTKWeatherXp@jaypeakresort After vernal equinox is such a tricky time for adjusting model snow accum. Not just elev & surface type, but sky exposure, slope dir., time-of-day, even cloud thickness. With [bright OVC/Noon/Lo-Elev/S-facing/No Shade], even +SN might not accum, but change any variable and...(!!)
@SurfSkiWeather Just watched your latest vid. You and I got into weather for similar reasons: The lighter portion of the newscast. Hurricane Gloria, various snowstorms & the t-storms of summer '88 were also key. It was all a nice break from the usual top stories.
@SurfSkiWeather Some viewers have reacted poorly to hearing this lake's ice-in/ice-out dates depend on too many factors to be a climate indicator. Wind can flex/break solid ice pack. Day-night makes a big difference. Sun angle. Dec snow hinders growth but Feb snow slows melting. List goes on.
@SurfSkiWeather Nice! Every winter at "the big lake." If they can find an opening they'll go for fish. If they can't they'll go for small land critters like squirrels and take them out to the ice where there's no escape.
@foxweather When you hear the sound of the ice against the steel hull, imagine Titanic's boiler room workers hearing that same sound, 30 seconds after getting a sudden "all-stop" order in the middle of their days-long "full-ahead" rhythm.
105 F in Moultonborough today. 101 at Laconia Airport. In Rochester, 107 F. These are measured readings, not calculated #heat index values. Numerous 108 F reports from western #NH. Hottest day in many years. More tomorrow! #NHwx#hot#heatwave#weather
