Things some never realized. The New Basin Canal (image circa 1948) which stretched from Lake Pontchartrain to downtown New Orleans. Southern Yacht Club is at the end of the canal on the right. The canal was dug from 1831-1838 by mostly Irish immigrants and approximately 8,000 died during that time, mostly from Yellow Fever. Much was filled in during the 1950's. Now, as you drive along Pontchartrain and West End Blvd and I-10, you know what was there before. The image is credited to the Louisiana Division/City Archives, New Orleans Public Library.
