There is alot of talk about the "SECRET" Information about how Taurus delivery depends on "HUGE" amounts of data.
Allow me to elaborate on this topic, and how this is a FALSE SMOKESCREEN laid by the German Government, because we talk about LESS THAN 20 Terabytes of Data.
Let us first do qualified assumptions on the baseline of what could be implied in the two supposed ways of Cruise Missle and then Taurus Mission Planning.
It is important to understand that cruise missles need to fly VERY low to avoid radar detection.
The lower they fly, the harder they are to detect and intercept.
The most famous case of this extreme low altitude flight is known from the AGM-129 ACM, where a test flight crashed into a parked trailer, because the mission planners did not know about it. THAT LOW.
This flying at extreme low altitudes is only possible because of two things:
- Knowledge to extreme details of the actual contour of the earth and ground, if you are "a bit off", you will crash
- The ability to transform this knowledge actionable into the missle, so that it can navigate extremely precisely despite GPS jamming etc.
The first is achieved rather simply, with very advanced radar sattelites, that map the earth 24/7 with very detailed radar mapping. Examples would be the US Lacrosse, or the German SAR-Lupe. These Systems provide 100s of Gigabytes of Data per day, allowing a "current" resolution of less than 3ft/1m of the earth surface.
Thats quite alot of data, we are talking dozens to 100s of Petabytes that were accumulated over the years of operation.
For actual operation, you will however not need the "3d history", but only a current dataset.
Let us calculate the size of the earth land surface, with a precision of 50cm.
TotalDataset=Grid cells per km2×Land Surface Area in km2×Storage per grid cell
Datset= Grid cells per km2=(0.51000)2 x 148 million km² x 4 bytes
2153 Terabytes is the result. Lets assume alot of overhead, lets make it 4 Petabyte instead of 2.1 Petabyte.
Let us assume that for Ukraine, a 1000x1000km sized dataset is required. That turn out to be 14.55 Terabytes. Given the Benefit of Doubt of inefficient or more extended data formats, lets make it 30 Terabytes.
"Quick+Easy": Planning of a Mission with Waypoints, with a baseline model of earth required to allow for a terrain contour flight in an altitude of 165ft above ground / 50 meters. This likely requires less than 10Gb of Data.
"Superprecise": Planning of a Mission with highly advanced Terrain Mapping, allowing flight in less than 70ft/20m, avoiding RU Air Defense, Requires at most, in the mission planning, 30TB, as calculated above, and whatever is uploaded to the missle.
Putting this into perspective, in 2005, when Taurus entered service, this was a huge amount of data, as even large Supercomputers only had 100s of Terabytes, spread across multiple rack cabinets.
In 2024, you can store 50tb in a single, 2.5inch SSD. Sending Ukraine a single Storage Server is not an issue, stop with the Smokescreens.
"More worryingly, Russia has identified Germany as the weakest link in the alliance and Scholz as a useful idiot to take Germany out of the equation." https://t.co/HHmQKxyfmo
