Could it be that there is no consensus in any of the disciplines (philosophy, psychology, sociology,...?) concerned with it on what is the nature of an attitude? I'm really struggling with the concept right now but I do not want to give up on it just yet. Anyone got any pointers?

@almut_w Mache es auch sehr gerne, aber merke immer wieder ein Implementierungs/Workflow-Problem mit meinen handschriftlichen Notizen auf dem Tablet oder im Notizbuch ... Habe da keine gute Lösung bisher.
@cdethier Currently, I'm surprised (?) that the notion of 'philosophical stances' has produced only limited metaphilosophical discussion, as far as I can see it right now.
"But what explains (let alone licenses) the adoption of any particular stance in philosophy? Chakravartty ultimately suggests that this is a fundamental mystery" (Rowbottom & Bueno 2011). Not the answer I was hoping for. Anyone got any ideas?
@cdethier Thanks so much, Corey, it's been the van Fraassen route that has led me to the special issue where Rowbottom & Bueno summarise the contributions (including Chakravartty's), I need to read more of it, though. Also, I will look into Stone's work for sure.

@Daniel_Propson@clarkjosephf@morallawwithin Analogously, practicing the epistemic virtue of, say, following the charity principle may work best if you're in an environment where not following the principle is somehow sanctioned (as opposed to a situation where it wouldn't have bad consequences for you not to follow it).
@Daniel_Propson@clarkjosephf@morallawwithin It would be cool if it could be backed up (creating good learning environments and such things). I'm not sure though if there couldn't be situations where you'd practice a certain virtue best under high pressure (as in you can only get braver when you actually fight the dragon).
@Daniel_Propson@clarkjosephf@morallawwithin And I thought for both of these discussions it would be interesting to make the point that low stakes or low-pressure are best suited in view of our epistemic aims.
@Daniel_Propson@clarkjosephf@morallawwithin Thanks! I was curious because I'm vaguely familiar with some arguments concerned with educating for intellectual virtues as proper aims of education and then there are other discussions concerning epistemic virtues reliably yielding favourable epistemic outcomes in epistemology.
