My bank refused to process my attempt to pay R0 to my daughter!

While sitting in court listening to President Ramaphosa’s legal team argue that R0 (nil) constitutes the payment of compensation, I tried to “pay an amount of R0” to my daughter using my banking app.

Unlike President Ramaphosa’s legal team, my bank refused to process my attempt to pay R0 to my daughter. It insisted that the payment amount had to be greater than zero. It appears that in the real world R0 is not regarded as an amount or a payment. 😀

Section 25(2)(b) of the Constitution explicitly provides that expropriation may take place only if compensation is paid by the payment of an amount.

Apparently, my bank and the Constitution have a better understanding of what constitutes both a payment and an “amount” than the ideologically driven argument that R0 can be regarded as the payment of an amount.

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa's legal team has started with their arguments in support of expropriation without compensation.

The President’s legal team argues that core Constitutional rights, such as the right to private property, should be subordinate to political aims, such as land redistribution.

There you have it. That's how far the President's commitment to private property rights goes: only as far as it does not stand in the ANC's way.

The Madlanga Commission has heard evidence suggesting that tobacco executive Mohamed Sayed acted as an intermediary between EFF leader Julius Malema and Crime Intelligence boss Feroz Khan in obtaining confidential case information.

Evidence leader Advocate Mathew Chaskalson told the Commission that Sayed forwarded another message from Malema to Khan, in which Malema requested information about the complainant in a specific case and provided the case number.

According to the evidence, Khan responded by sending the case details as well as the complainant’s address. The complainant was identified as Anoosh Rooplal, the curator of VBS Mutual Bank.

Chaskalson argued that the evidence indicates Malema sought the information because he had been implicated, rightly or wrongly, in alleged wrongdoing linked to the matter. He added that Malema was not entitled to receive the confidential information.
